South Australia Continued

Adelaide has four seasons, with maximum temperatures averaging 28 degrees centigrade between November and March. Minimums can be below 10 degrees between June and September. Rainfall is heaviest from May to September. The further north and west you go, the drier and hotter it gets.

Adelaide is a solid, gracious, civilised city, surrounded by parkland, and situated on the banks of the Torrens River. The metropolitan area is bound by the scenic Adelaide Hills and the shores of Gulf St Vincent. Adelaide is often referred to as the `City of Churches'.

The Barossa Valley is arguably the best-known wine-producing region in Australia. The gently sloping valley was settled in 1842 by German settlers fleeing religious persecution in Prussia and Silesia, and its distinct Germanic flavour remains. Most of the wineries encourage casual visits for tasting and cellar sales.

The South East of South Australia welcomes you to a region rich in natural, historical and cultural diversity. Set within this region is the unique natural landscape of Bool Lagoon to the class and grandeur of our world renowned Coonawarra wine district.

The Murray River dominates this beautiful region as it carves its lazy way past steep cliffs, stately red gums, golden citrus orchards and vast green vineyards with its trickling source in the high country south of Mt. Kosciusko. The river flows 2530 kilometres to Encounter Bay at the 'Mouth of the Murray' and the Great Southern Ocean. It is often been called Australia's Mississippi River.

The scenery changes at every bend with birds of bewildering variety flocking in from as far away as the Gulf of Carpenteria to breed among the tough Mallee scrub. The river's moods are constantly changing, too...from the silence of an early morning mist to the spectacular fireworks of a bush sunset.

In the days before the bridge was built, makeshift ferries were used to cross the Murray River and stock was made to swim the river near the homestead of the first settler in the area, George Edwards. At that time the area around Murray Bridge was known as Edwards Crossing.

During the years 1837 to 1879, while the first roadbridge was being built, a community grew to support the builders. A government town was laid out and named Mobilong in 1884. This name was not popularly accepted and the name Murray Bridge, used from the time the bridge was commenced, was officially gazetted in 1924. The community grew rapidly around the bridge, extending to the eastern bank of the river and the town became an important cog in the state's economy when a railway line linked the paddlesteamer river trade with Adelaide in 1885 and in 1886 crossed the river to join the eastern states.

Kangaroo Island is an island of the coast of South Australia. The island boasts a wide variety of native flora and fauna in its natural habitat, unpolluted beaches and magnificent coastal scenery. The history of this tiny island is that the pirates came first, then the settlers. The wrecks of 40 ships remain around the island.

Some of the unique wildlife experiences at Kangaroo Island include sea-lions at Seal Bay where they can be seen resting between trips to sea. Seal Bay is the home to around 500 Australian Sea-lions.
