Esperance is one of many locations along the southern coast bestowed with a name by early French navigators, it translates roughly as "hope, with confidence and faith in the future".
The South East has a rich natural and cultural heritage, including spectacular caves and sinkhole formations that underlie fertile soils, to the rugged, pristine coastline, wetlands, and a unique pioneering and cultural history that is increasingly being recorded and celebrated.
Void of high rise structures and crowds, the Esperance region is instead characterised by spectacular coastal scenery; an abundance of wildlife including seals, dolphins, whales, emus and sea eagles; pristine beaches; hundreds of islands and extensive national parks. It is one of the only places in Western Australia where you will see kangaroos sunbathing on the beach!
