The Gascoyne region covers Exmouth on the coast to inland areas including Gascoyne Junction. Carnarvon is known as the "Gateway to the North" and the whole area commonly known as the "Outback Coast". The world's largest monocline, Mount Augustus is situated in the region. Also in this area is Monkey Mia in which people have the opportunity to play and feed the dolphins, and Ningaloo Reef the world's longest fringing reef.
Shark Bay was placed on the "World Heritage" list in 1991. It is situated on the most western point of the coast and covers an area of 2.3 million hectares.
There are 26 species of endangered Australian mammals and five of those are found on Bernier and Dorre Island in the Shark Bay area.
The five endangered mammals are the boodie or burrowing bettong, rufous hare wallaby, banded hare wallaby, the Shark Bay mouse and the western barred bandicoot.
