Sixteen-year-old twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh adjust to life at West Beverly Hills High after moving from Minnesota. In the opener, Brenda is befriended by snobbish Kelly, who picks her as a chemistry lab partner to avoid being paired with a fat girl. A rich but reclusive girl invites the entire school (except the freshmen) to a party at her house. Brandon connects with the hostess, Marianne, and goes on a date with her. He insinuates that they slept together, prompting rumors to fly at school. Brenda become romantically involved with a lawyer in his mid 20s.

Brandon meets Dylan McKay, a mysterious loner who stops some jocks from harassing Scott in tech class. Steve's actress mother encourages him to be nice to David because she mistakenly believes that David's father is a producer.

1.03 Every Dream Has It's Price (Originally Aired 10/18/1990)
Brenda gets included in a new friend's problem. Brandon begins work at a trendy restaurant, where his boss treats him shabbily. He quits after learning that she also pays the minority employees less than minimum wage. He gets a waiter job at a diner called the Peach Pit, as Dylan is friends with the owner. Cindy gets a maid, against her wishes.

Brandon gets a visit from his Minneapolis girlfriend, while Brenda has an adventure in baby-sitting for a hunk teacher.

Recruits from outside the school district may sink Brandon's shot at making the basketball team, while Brenda takes another shot at driver's training.
