small when this happened but I can remember quite a
bit about it. All the folks from out of town stayed
at our house during the trial, which was held in
Independence as that is the county seat of Inyo
County. Lovett was a very bad man. His wife and
Aunt Nan [Uncle Charlie Sanders' wife] were
sisters. Lovett had stood back in the room & shot
through the screen door as the paper said. His wife
was in bed in the same room with a newborn baby
only a day or so old. She told some of the folks
that he got up that morning and cleaned his guns &
knives & she asked what he was going to do. He said
`I am going to kill some son of a b---- sometime
today.' He shot three times; twice with a shotgun &
at least one shot was loaded with buckshot. Uncle
Frank had a deep cleft in his chin & one shot went
in the cleft. The folks didn't know it but my
grandmother went in the room with some of the folks
to look at Uncle Frank & I went in too. The blood
hadn't been washed off yet & I remember seeing that
hole in his chin. The last shot burned a crease
across Uncle Elias Sanders neck as he cradled Uncle
Frank's head in his arms. Lovett was trying to kill
him too."
