Richard & Mary Ann moved to Madison, Walker, & Blount Co.,
AL. He is shown in 1809 in Madison Co., where he applied for a land
grant and with 2 slaves in Walker Co. They had 13 children, 12 of
whom were born in AL. In 1836 he & his family moved to Houston
Co. TX. He received a Republic of TX land grant #102 for 1280 acres,
a 2nd class grant in 1840 He filed a grant for 940 acres in Coryelle Co.,
& 182 Acres in Bell Co. 28OCT1854. The family is listed in the
1840 Republic of TX census in Houston Co., They moved to Bastrop
Co., in 1849 where Richard & Mary Ann both died. They are buried
in Jeddo Cemetery in SE Bastrop Co., TX.

Wm. O. HALLMARK lists Mary Ann's birth year as 1799; however this makes
the birthdate of Marilda in 1808 a little bit of a problem. I note
also that the child born after Marilda is Nancy born in either 1811 or
1817, depending on what source you use. This could use some
clarification. Also sometimes the name of Prewitt is spelled Pruitt.

WOOTTERS for the explanation of the name controversy. She explains
that
Serena was incorrectly recorded on the 1850 census as Susannah.
Serena
was still alive as was shown on a deed that she signed with her husband
on January 8, 1851 as Cyrena HALLMARK. Thus the incorrect census
name
gives rise to John B. having had three wives-Serena (Cyrena), then
Susannah then Rachel. If you accept Mrs. WOOTTERS work, it would
seem
that John B. only had two wives. That is what I think is correct
and is
what I have chosen to enter.

John is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Houston Co., TX. Mrs.
Wootters, in the History of Houston Co. reports that John signed a deed
031860 but was missing from the June 20, 1860 census. John's wives
names are a puzzle. Fran Lomas reports that he was married to Serena
Box, Susannah Hallmark and Rachel Ann Kenley. Mrs. Wooters who is
a descendant of John B. and Serena through their daughter Mary Ann Hallmark
(b.30DEC1847, d. 04DEC1895 both in Houston Co.) believes otherwise.
She says that Serena Box Hallmark who had married John in 1814/1815 and
was listed on the 1850 census as "Susannah" signed a deed with John B.
in 1851 as Serena Hallmark as his wife in front of a judge. GKHJ 1996
John B. Hallmark was born in Alabama about 1810. It has been
said that his birthdate was December 28, 1810 but the source of the date
is unknown. By October 1, 1837 he was married and had received a
land grant for 1280 in Houston Co., TX. Along with his father, George
and other Hallmark relations, he was a signer of a petition to the Congress
of the Republic of Texas to create a new county which became Houston County.
He was also a signer of a petition of Houston County citizens who protested
the "insufferable" tariff and ad valorem taxes.
John B. Hallmark married first Serena Box circa 1835. Some say
that this was Serena Box Hallmark, daughter of Richard M. Hallmark and
Mary Ann Prewitt, but I am inclined to agree others who think that she
was Serena Box not Serena Box Hallmark before her marriage. More
research needs to be undertaken.

WOOTTERS for the explanation of the name controversy. She explains
that
Serena was incorrectly recorded on the 1850 census as Susannah.
Serena
was still alive as was shown on a deed that she signed with her husband
on January 8, 1851 as Cyrena HALLMARK. Thus the incorrect census
name
gives rise to John B. having had three wives-Serena (Cyrena), then
Susannah then Rachel. If you accept Mrs. WOOTTERS work, it would
seem
that John B. only had two wives. That is what I think is correct
and is
what I have chosen to enter.

John is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Houston Co., TX. Mrs.
Wootters, in the History of Houston Co. reports that John signed a deed
031860 but was missing from the June 20, 1860 census. John's wives
names are a puzzle. Fran Lomas reports that he was married to Serena
Box, Susannah Hallmark and Rachel Ann Kenley. Mrs. Wooters who is
a descendant of John B. and Serena through their daughter Mary Ann Hallmark
(b.30DEC1847, d. 04DEC1895 both in Houston Co.) believes otherwise.
She says that Serena Box Hallmark who had married John in 1814/1815 and
was listed on the 1850 census as "Susannah" signed a deed with John B.
in 1851 as Serena Hallmark as his wife in front of a judge. GKHJ 1996
John B. Hallmark was born in Alabama about 1810. It has been
said that his birthdate was December 28, 1810 but the source of the date
is unknown. By October 1, 1837 he was married and had received a
land grant for 1280 in Houston Co., TX. Along with his father, George
and other Hallmark relations, he was a signer of a petition to the Congress
of the Republic of Texas to create a new county which became Houston County.
He was also a signer of a petition of Houston County citizens who protested
the "insufferable" tariff and ad valorem taxes.
John B. Hallmark married first Serena Box circa 1835. Some say
that this was Serena Box Hallmark, daughter of Richard M. Hallmark and
Mary Ann Prewitt, but I am inclined to agree others who think that she
was Serena Box not Serena Box Hallmark before her marriage. More
research needs to be undertaken.

WOOTTERS for the explanation of the name controversy. She explains
that
Serena was incorrectly recorded on the 1850 census as Susannah.
Serena
was still alive as was shown on a deed that she signed with her husband
on January 8, 1851 as Cyrena HALLMARK. Thus the incorrect census
name
gives rise to John B. having had three wives-Serena (Cyrena), then
Susannah then Rachel. If you accept Mrs. WOOTTERS work, it would
seem
that John B. only had two wives. That is what I think is correct
and is
what I have chosen to enter.

Notes for JOHN B. HALLMARK:
John is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Houston Co., TX. Mrs.
Wootters, in the History of Houston Co. reports that John signed a deed
031860 but was missing from the June 20, 1860 census. John's wives
names are a puzzle. Fran Lomas reports that he was married to Serena
Box, Susannah Hallmark and Rachel Ann Kenley. Mrs. Wooters who is
a descendant of John B. and Serena through their daughter Mary Ann Hallmark
(b.30DEC1847, d. 04DEC1895 both in Houston Co.) believes otherwise.
She says that Serena Box Hallmark who had married John in 1814/1815 and
was listed on the 1850 census as "Susannah" signed a deed with John B.
in 1851 as Serena Hallmark as his wife in front of a judge. GKHJ 1996
John B. Hallmark was born in Alabama about 1810. It has been
said that his birthdate was December 28, 1810 but the source of the date
is unknown. By October 1, 1837 he was married and had received a
land grant for 1280 in Houston Co., TX. Along with his father, George
and other Hallmark relations, he was a signer of a petition to the Congress
of the Republic of Texas to create a new county which became Houston County.
He was also a signer of a petition of Houston County citizens who protested
the "insufferable" tariff and ad valorem taxes.
John B. Hallmark married first Serena Box circa 1835. Some say
that this was Serena Box Hallmark, daughter of Richard M. Hallmark and
Mary Ann Prewitt, but I am inclined to agree others who think that she
was Serena Box not Serena Box Hallmark before her marriage. More
research needs to be undertaken.
