       NB. With this combination of records, from father and son, there can be no doubt that the 141 acres of land in Orange County, in that portion which became Augusta County in 1745, descended to Alexander McDonald from his father, Randall McDonald, and that his mother, Jean (or Jane ?) had evidently remarried and joined him in the deed of sale as she evidently     retained a dower right in said land. Earlier historians of the McDonald family have confused this Jane or Jean McDonald later McClehill with a Jennet McDonald, who on 16 November 1757, with John Wright and Daniel Smith, her securities, gave Bond in the sum of 100 pds as Administratrix of the Estate of RANDALL MCDONALD, DECEASED (Augusta Co, VA, WB2-203).       However it should be noted that this cannot be as Jane (Jean) widow of Randall McDonald who died 1743/4 was remarried shortly thereafter to Joseph McClehill. For some reason they have assigned the above Randall (d 1757) as a son of Randall who died 1743/4 (along with his several       sisters). The fact that his mother is still named Jennet McDonald in 1757 proves that he could not have been a son of the earlier Randall and Jane his wife. As far as the records show our Alexander was an only child.

       10 May 1780 - Indenture in which William Preston and William Thompson, Executors of the Will of William Patton, late of Augusta County, deceased, sell to ALEXANDER MCDONALD OF THE COUNTY OF BOTETOURT, a tract of land in the said county of Botetourt, FORMERLY AUGUSTA COUNTY, containing 100 acres more or less, on a Branch of the Catawba called Middle Lick Rune, etc. (for 25 pds 12 shillings) - Recorded May Court 1780, DB2-539.
       1783 TAX: ALEXANDER MCDONALD is the head of one house-hold and reports one white tithe (age 21 years or over) (himself) no slaves four horses and 12 cattle. In this year (1783) he also reports himself as the owner of 175 acres of land (probably in anticipation of the following grant).
       30 August 1785 - Patent for 75 acres of land granted to ALEXANDER MCDONALD IN THE COUNTY OF BOTETOURT on Lick Run, a branch of the Catawba, being the waters of James River, adjoining a tract he purchased of William Preston - (for 10 shillings) - (signed) - Patrick Henry. Grants of Virginia - Book R, page 274.
       1785 TAX: Botetourt Co, VA, Alexander McDonald 175 acres and 75 acres.
       1787 TAX: Botetourt Co, VA, Alexander McDonald reports three white tithes, himself and two sons between age 16 and 21 whose names are given as JAMES AND ALEXANDER MCDONALD. No slaves, three horses and 10 cattle.
       14 October 1788 - Indenture in which ALEXANDER MCDONALD AND MARGARET, HIS WIFE, OF THE COUNTY OF BOTETOURT, sell to David Hanson, of the same county - for 175 pds - TWO tracts of land in said county - on a branch of the Catawba called Middle Lick Run one containing 100 acres and the other containing 75 acres which ,was granted to the said ALEXANDER MCDONALD       by-Patent dated 13th (sic) August 1785 - Recorded same date. DB4-53.
       1788 TAX: This the last year that Alexander appears on the Personal Property Tax list although his 175 acres continues to appear on the land tax list for the years 1789 and 1790. Alexander had sold this land the latter part of 1788 and his family removed from Botetourt County after October 1788, probably to Tennessee.

Baker, and Norma Walker Taylor (Mrs, Joseph Feamster) #462142.      Bartow in the Roster of Soldiers in Tennessee DAR 1960-1970, Vol 2, p. 531 states McDonald, Alexander Born 1736/37., probably in Lancaster, County, PA. Died 1811 in Jefferson County, Tenn. His wife's name was Margaret. They were married 1759 probably in Augusta county Va. He lived in Augusta Co, VA during the Revolutionary Service. Served as a private in Capt.       David McClure's Co. D, later as a Private in Capt. William Drake's [Darke] Co 8th Reg of Va. Forces Foot, commanded by Col. Abraham Bowman.        The Consolidated Service Records of the Eighth Virginia list a Pvt. Alexander McDonald from 25 May 1776 to 30 April 1777, 11 mos 6 days, under Capt. Wm. Darke. He is listed on the payroll of May/Jun 1777 now under Maj. Darke and Col Abraham Bowman. The muster rolls of May/Jun and Jul have him sick in Georgia. (Microfilm M881, Roll 1048). Col. Muhlenberg had       taken this regiment to Charleston, SC, in 1776 under MGen. Charles Lee not returning to Washington's Army until early 1777, where upon promotion to BGen., he was relieved by Bowman. Was our Alexander left in the south?  Robert Douthat Stoner in his A Seed-Bed of the Republic has Alexander and his son Randolph as in the Capt. May's company, the 52nd District,   Botetourt Co, VA, with Lt. Joseph Snodgrass.
