NEW ERA UNIVERSITY HOLDS THE 1ST EVER ICT FUN CAMP 2002
|
BY DONATS
I'd agree if it will be dubbed as one of the biggest IT events of the year. It had everything for everyone, from the teachers to students, kids or adults, professionals or not. For those who want to find out the products and services of IT and IT-enabled companies, the exhibit plays host to big firms such as PLDT, APC, Pilnet, Cisco, Yehey.com, Informatics, East-West Bank, among others. IT presentations give curious individuals like me a more in-depth look at the latest gadgets/technologies that are currently making waves here and abroad, like Microsoft's X-Box and .NET platform. Plenary sessions and Boot Camps provide a venue for teachers and students to learn desktop publishing, webpage design, office automation, and other IT know-hows, then apply them through hands-on application. An IT competition was also held with generous amount of prizes for the winners.
I noticed the event was supported by major names in the field. Aside from the mentioned above, major sponsors include Edsamail, Genetic Computer Institute, Fujitsu, Alcatel, Epson, IBM, Microsoft, Net-25 and Pinoyexchange.com, not to mention food corporations who participated in the Food Fair, and specialty stores who took part in the bazaar. The orgainzers and planners did a very nice job. Though publicity was not that wide (I only learned about the fair through Net-25).
The Fun Camp, which was held March 18-23, 2002, was the first such event organized by New Era University. NEU, which gained university status last June 30, 1995, plans to make the event an annual affair to look forward to. The success of this year's Fun Camp inspired them to make it an annual big event. No less than Secretary Mar Roxas spoke in the first Plenary Session and talked about the importance of ICT especially in the new economy of the Philippines.
If you're no IT buff, you still have lots of things to do. The KTV booth at the bazaar will release the Mariah Carey or BSB in you (based on the voices I heard while I was checking out the fair!), not to mention the Karaoke Singing Contest held in the quadrangle where audiences' applause determines the winner. 8 PCs are also networked to let priviledged visitors play Counterstrike for every purchase at the bazaar. And you can feast your taste buds to the wide variety of delectable food available within your reach. Free internet surf was also offered at the booth of PLDT to try out their DSL connection. I also got a great bargain: I only paid PhP 40.00 for 6 PC World magazines!!!
How I wish UST would also organize such an event. Im glad I was able to visit NEU's ICT Fun Camp. It was worth the visit. A tip when you go next year: you just have to remember where your locale is (remember, it's an Iglesia Ni Cristo Territory)!Ü
