Why do I only fly electric powered
radio controlled airplanes anymore?
The reasons are numerous and include, but are not limited to the following:
1 - Electric planes are quiet. This means I can fly in many places which were not available using noisy, internal combustion (IC) engines. This allows me to fly much more often than folks who use IC engine powered planes. I can be in the park in the early morning hours, flying my electric powered plane directly over the houses in the neighborhood, but nobody is disturbed because they can't hear what's going on.
2 - Electric planes are reliable. When I get to the flying field I get my planes in the air quicker because I don't have to fiddle with the throttle settings of an IC engine. This is especially nice because cold, hot or humid weather conditions do not affect the reliability of electric motors. I fly more while I'm at the flying field because I don't have to adjust those often temperamental engines.
3 - I can turn the motor off & back on again during flight - this can help lengthen flight times & gives an opportunity to practice fun things like gliding around without the motor on - when I want to resume power, I just turn the motor back on.
4 - There's no mess!!! I don't have to wipe that slimey gook off my planes after an afternoon of flying. Electric powered flight is clean which also means I don't spend any time having to clean up my model after a day's worth of flying and the exhaust residue won't ever creep into my plane, possibly soaking into the frame & causing added weight & damage. Having no mess or noise also means I can fly small electric planes indoors - which means I can fly regardless of outside weather - day or night. Finding a suitable indoor flying area can often be difficult, however.
5 - Lower Cost & Convienience - batteries can be recharged 1000 times - at a cost of only $25 per battery pack, this means I can get over 166 hours of flying from only one battery pack - that's a LOT of flying!
6 - I'm saving the environment by using clean sources of fuel to power my plane.
