How happy now we seem.
We all smile for the camera.
Our life is but a dream
The lady in this picture
Who seems to head it all
Has left me lying bleeding
As she hides behind her wall
I try to recompense
For all our lonely hours
And wishful impotence
Yet has she not failed me
And who will seek me out here
Upon this lonely sea
Though words could not convey
And in my anguished silence
I cried for light of day
Though you may not see mine
And take that chance of daring
To see if you shall find
That leads to love anew
And I shall give my honor
As fresh as morning dew
You never more need fear
That what has come between us
Should ever reappear
But my kiss has no meaning
My lips lie listless still
For one holds me guilty
And holds to her own will
Far more than you and I
Must strangers give me solace
Or hold me as I die
More close than our sweet breath
And whose name shall I call then
When I approach my death
She is but a dream here
I hold her to my heart
You wonder where I am now
As we seem miles apart
The image looks so fine
Will all we have just die here
And wither on the vine
Yet surely now you know
That someone has my essence
Another's touched this soul
And here if we remain
What must I now relinquish
And what now shall I gain
If we cannot go on
Just smile now for the camera
For this is all we own
And from our separate bedrooms
I know that I have failed her
I tried to lend some meaning
Give to me of your substance
The fine art of forgiveness
The past we'll place behind us
Must strangers know my own heart
Must strangers know my secrets
So smile now for the camera
You know I cannot leave you
And so if here we linger
If we can go no higher
