MULLINS FAMILY
GENEALOGY
Generation No. 1
- 1. LOUIS MULLINS was born Abt. 1790. He
married Bridget ?? MULLINS.
Notes for BRIDGET ?? MULLINS:
1850 Talbot Co.Ga Census has age
60.
Notes for LOUIS MULLINS:
A BIT OF HISTORY
THE MULLINS FAMILY CAME FROM NORTH CAROLINA,
EXACT LOCATION HAS NOT BEEN ASCERTAINED YET,
BUT, AS OF JULY 10, 1995, THE SEARCH IS STILL
ON.
WHETHER OR NOT LOUIS MULLINS(GREAT GREAT
GRANDFATHER) WAS THE FIRST BORN COULD NOT BE
REMEMBERED, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT CATHERINE
GIPSON (GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER) WAS THE
ELDEST CHILD OF THE GIPSON FAMILY,AND LOUIS
WAS THE THIRD SON IN THE MULLINS FAMILY.
ON THE MULLINS SIDE OF THE HOUSE THERE WERE
THREE BOYS AND ONE GIRL; THOMAS KINNON, JOHN,
LOUIS, and MARY, (POSSIBLY OTHERS).
ON THE GIPSON SIDE OF THE HOUSE THERE WAS
FOUR GIRLS AND TWO BOYS; CATHERINE, MARY,
GENIE, DUCK, BEN, and SAMPSON.(POSSIBLY
OTHERS).
TOM MULLINS (GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER'S
BROTHER) MOVED NEAR TO TROY WHEN HE CAME FROM
GEORGIA, PROBABLY AS LATE AS 1849, JOEL D.
MURPHREE BELIEVES. IF IT WAS IN 1849, HE CAME
MUCH LATER THAN LOUIS. IT IS BELIEVED THAT
TOM HAD FOUR CHILDREN; DR. JOHN MULLINS,AND
THREE GIRLS. ONE OF HIS GIRLS MAY HAVE
MARRIED A MURPHREE, AND ONE MARRIED AN
ADAMS.
IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE FIRST MULLINS REUNION
WAS HELD JULY 4, 1865.LOUIS MULLINS WAS SO
HAPPY OVER THE RETURN OF HIS BOYS AFTER THE
WAR, THAT HE CALLED THE FAMILY TOGETHER FOR A
CELEBRATION ON JULY 4TH,1865; AGAIN IN 1866,
AND 1867. BY 1868, HE HAD PASSED ON -(JUNE
23, 1868) AND SADNESS REPLACED THE JOYFULNESS
ON THIS 4TH OF JULY.
DELLA REMEMBERS A REUNION THAT WAS HELD IN
1885, OR THERE ABOUT, WHICH WAS HELD AT A
LITTLE SCHOOL HOUSE IN, OR NEAR, THE DEAN AND
JUDAH SETTLEMENT, ABOUT 4 MILES SOUTH OF
OZARK.

Generation No. 2
2. LOUIS2 MULLINS (BRIDGET ??1) was born
April 27, 1815 in New Bern, CravenCo, NC.,
and died June 23, 1868 in SOUTH OF
OZARK,ALA.. He married CATHERINE GIPSON
December 1835 in Monroe Co.,Ga, daughter of
WILLIAM GIPSON and ELIZABETH SNELLGROVE.
Notes for LOUIS MULLINS:
There have been some papers written using
different ways that the names are spelled.
Some spell Louis as LEWIS and the same goes
for Catherine's last name you will find it
GIPSON and GIBSON. Either way you find it , I
am thankful that the papers were written.
Some papers that I found were written by Lev
DeWitt Mullins, and others by Louis Oben
Wells or a son of his. I do not have a signed
copy. But I would like to make it known that
without their papers a lot of our history
would be lost.
DELLA REMEMBERS HEARING HER MOTHER TELL OF
THIS INCIDENT: WHEN THE MULLINS MOVED INTO
THE COMMUNITY WHERE THE GIPSON FAMILY LIVED,
LOUIS, 19, SAW FOR THE FIRST TIME CATHRINE,
15, AT CHURCH ONE DAY. HE KEPT GAZING AT HER
AND KEPT IT UP SO LONG THAT IT BECAME
EMBARRASSING, SO SHE MOVED HER SEAT; HE
FOLLOWED SUIT AND KEPT UP THE GAZING. ABOUT
THAT TIME,THERE WAS AN INTERMISSION; AND THE
YOUNG MAN PROMPTLY INTRODUCED HIMSELF TO THE
YOUNG LADY. IT SEEMS THAT HE FELL IN LOVE
WITH HER AT FIRST SIGHT, BUT SHE HAD TO BE
WOOED AND WON. A LITTLE LATER SHE WAS A GUEST
IN HIS HOME, AND LOVED HIS SISTER, MARY, BUT
DIDN'T LIKE HIM SO WELL AT FIRST BUT FINALLY.
YES FINALLY. SO LOUIS MULLINS, 20, MARRIED
CATHRINE GIPSON, 16, NEAR CHRISTMAS TIME
1835. TO THIS UNION 11 CHILDREN WERE BORN.
THE 10TH CHILD ADELIA (ADELLA) AKA DELLA WAS
THE GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF CHRISTINE GRIMES
THACKER.
DELLA MARRIED WILLIAM AUGUSTUS GRIMES.
LOUIS MULLINS IS BURIED ON THE OLD FARM LAND.
SOME WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HIM MOVED TO
DALEVILLE TO BE WITH CATHRINE, THE CHILDREN
ALSO. I THINK GREAT UNCLE LUNSFORD MAY BE THE
ONLY ONE WHO MAY KNOW HOW TO GET TO THE
GRAVES, AND HE'S NOT IN THE BEST OF HEALTH. A
TOMBSTONE WITH THE FOLLOWING INSCRIPTION
MARKS HIS GRAVE; "LUAS MULLINS BORN APRIL
27, 1815, DIED JUNE 23,1868, 'HIS HAPPY SOUL
HAS WINGED ITS WAY TO ONE PURE BRIGHT ETERNAL
DAY" "(AGE 53 YEARS ,1 MONTH AND 26 DAYS).
THE GRAVE WAS ENCLOSED BY A HART PINE PICKET
FENCE BELTED TOGETHER WITH PEGS (NO NAILS).
THERE WAS A FIRE (WHEN I DON'T KNOW) A WHILE
BACK I'M GUESSING, THE FIRE BURNED UP TO THE
PICKET AND STOPPED. SOME OF THE PICKETS WERE
BLACKENED BUT NOT BURNT.
Update: March 21,1999. I went to
Ozark, Alabama on Friday March 19th to meet
with (Still living), a 2nd Cousin; Lunsford
Grimes (he died Dec 1997) was her Uncle and
he had tried to tell her how to get to the
graves. We went to the site where she thought
it was but it was a little further down the
road; Great Uncle Lunsford had told her a
couple of blocks down the dirt road and to
the left. Well it turns out that there was
once another road, and off of that road the
graves would have been on the Left. On Friday
I drove up and down the road trying to find
the site. Well on Sat.the 20th of March I met
up with Tom and Lynn Wynn we went back to the
search for the graves. The three of us went
down the road a little further near a gate,
but could not see anything...so we went to
the other place that I thought it could be
from the directions given. We had pulled
over, gotten out of the van, and this truck
pulls up; he had enough room to go around me
but he didn't. I guess he was wondering why
we were there, so I went up to the truck to
ask him if he knew anything. After asking
about the Mullins, he asked if we were
looking for the graves! Lo and Behold, he
and his family now own the land where the
graves are! He offered to turn around and
show us the area where the graves are; so of
course we took the offer. We did not go to
the grave site but we now know the area. The
graves were about a 15 minute walk through
overgrown brush, (Person Still Living) now
owns the land and he told us that he had seen
the graves many times growing up, but he was
not sure if they were still there with the
tombstones showing. He said that some lumber
was cut years ago and a tombstone had been
found near the power poles that are now
there. (Person Still living) did say he would
try and go to the site in the next few days
and see what is still there. Now isn't that
very nice of him to help in this way?

Notes for CATHERINE GIPSON:
CATHRINE IS BURIED AT DALEVILLE,ALA. A
TOMBSTONE WITH THIS INSCRIPTION MARKS HER
GRAVE, CATHRINE, WIFE OF LOUIS MULLINS, BORN
FEB. 26, 1819, DIED JULY 10, 1888 ,'DYING IS
BUT GOING HOME'".
WHEN CATHRINE DIED, JOHN,THE ONLY ONE OF THE
10 CHILDREN LIVING AT OR NEAR THE OLD HOME
PLACE, WANTED HER BURIED BY THE SIDE OF HER
HUSBAND. BUT SOME OF THE OTHERS WANTED HER
BURIED AT DALEVILLE, WHERE SHE HAD LIVED FOR
SEVERAL YEARS, EBEN (THE WRITER OF THE
REUNION PAPER) REMEMBERS THAT SHE LIVED WITH
TAVIE THE LAST YEAR OR TWO OF HER LIFE.
BEFORE THAT SHE HAD LIVED WITH KATE AND
OTHERS. HE DOES NOT REMEMBER HER LIVING WITH
HIS PARENTS, BUT DOES REMEMBER THAT MARY
GIPSON, HER SISTER, LIVED WITH THEM, OR WAS
LIVING WITH THEM AT THE TIME OF HER DEATH IN
1886. MARY IS BURIED IN NEWTON BY THE SIDE OF
HER BROTHER, CHARLIE.

" Emily had much faith in prayer; once when
Gordon was away from home, a distant forest
fire had threatened to come on down-wind to
their small home. She bent to her knees and
called on Almighty God! Tradition has lost
the amount of time involved in the prayer's
answer.. but it was a positive one, in the
form of a thunderstorm, for this trusting
mother!" It is believed that this is the same
fire that I was told that came right up to
the pine picket fence that encloses the
graves of great, great grandfather Louis
Mullins and his two young
sons.
