These small 0-6-0 shunters were built in the late 50s and early 60s by British Railways for use in small yards. 230 of them were built and many of them have survived into preservation. 2 examples are still in the hands of mainline operators. One of these is 03179 which, with 03079, worked on the Isle of Wight until 1996, when they were both withdrawn. 03079 was taken into preservation, while 03179 was bought by West Anglia Great Northern Railways, and restored to use at Hornsey depot, London, where it is shunting EMU stock. Both of these locos had their cab roof lowered, to navigate the Ryde tunnel, as did 03119 and 03382 for use in South Wales.
