Civilisation II
Civilization II by Microprose is an updated version of the bestselling Civilization game, with improved graphics and AI. You begin the game with a small tribe of settlers, who have minimal knowledge and abilities, and gradually over time your civilization advances and grows, with the eventual aim being to land a spaceship on the nearby Alpha Centurii star system.
As your civilization advances the types of units you have available become more advanced.
From the early Catapults and Knights...
Through Cavalry and Alpine Troops...
To Armours and Submarines.
Of course you are not alone in the world. As you explore you come across other nations, played by the computer, or in the multiplayer version played by other human beings. You have to decide whether to fight these nations and gain control of their land, or sign an uneasy peace treaty, or a full blown alliance.
During the discussions towards making these decisions you will meet with a variety of brightly coloured emissaries from the various nations.
And you get rewards for your labours as well. The local people gradually improve your throne room from this...

All in all this is a well thought out and designed game and it definitely worth buying at least one of the many versions of Civilization now available.
