It is a cool spring morning at Jerdan Weyr, and a hatching had occured the day before. The dew is still clinging to the ground as you step inside to escape the slight chill in the air. You go to the Lower Caverns to drink a hot cup of klah. You get your cup and go sit next to someone you recognize; however, you can't quite remember what his name is. Then it hits you. It's R'don the new brown dragonrider that sang at the Gather just before the hatching. You decide to greet your old friend and see how it is going with him and his new dragon.
"Hello," he says in return.
"How is your new dragon," you ask politely.
"He is great," he says with pride.
"What was his name again," you ask not quite remembering because of the effects of the Benden wine you had had at the Gather and at the Impression banquet.
"Still suffering from the Benden," he asks with a chuckle.
"Yes," you say slightly embarrassed.
"That's okay. I think most of the people are, too." You both laugh at the effects the wine can have over people after a hatching. You calm yourself enough to repeat the question you posed earlier.
"His name is Dedith," R'don says with great pride.
"That is an awesome name," you say with admiration at the dragon's name.
"I think so, too," he says conversationally. There is a moment of silence before he asks you what you have been waiting for.
"Would you like to see him," he asks politely.
"I would love to see him," you say with overwhelming excitement.
"Let's go then. But, we must be quiet becuse I think he is still asleep." he says rising from the table.
"I'm am awake. I would like to see your friend though," the brown informs his rider.
"Okay," he says to his dragon. Then he turns back to you. "Dedith wants to meet you."
"Cool," you say amazed that a dragon wants to meet you.
"Let's go already," he says with impatience.
You follow him up several flights of stairs and lose count of all the many turns. You finally enter a small comfortable weyr. You notice that everything seems to be in perfect order. The equipment is stacked in the corner, and the table looks like it has just been cleaned off. You spot the little dragon curled up on the enormous stone couch. You marvel at how small the little hatchling is, and then you remember how big the dragon will eventually become.
"Is this him," you asked stunned.
"Yes, this is Dedith," he says smiling.
"He seems so small," you say looking at the little dragon.
"Believe me he'll grow fast enough," R'don says truthfully.
"I know he will. It's just amazing to think that he's going to get so big." you explain.
"I know exactly what you mean. I had the same feeling after I hatched him." he says smiling at his brown.
"R'don can you and your friend oil me? My skin itches terribly," the brown informs his rider.
"Alright, Dedith," R'don answers. He then turns back to you. "Would you be so kind as to help me oil my little hatchling," he asks in a mocking tone.
"I would be honored," you say in the same mocking tone. You both hug your ribs laughing uncontrollably. Then, Dedith reminds you both of what you are suppose to be doing.
"I am sorry, Dedith. I just got a bit distracted." the rider says sincerely.
"That's okay. But can you please hurry? I am itching something awful," Dedith complains to his rider.
"We better get to work. Dedith is getting agitated, and that is not healthy for a dragon especially one hatched so recently." R'don says picking up the jar of oil.
"It won't take that long," you say cheerfully.
You both start on the seemingly simple task. However, it takes more time than you had counted on spending. Once the brown hatchling is comfortable, you and R'don share some klah and reminsce about the hatching. Realizing that it is getting late you decide that you need to go about the rest of your business. R'don thanks you for your help, and you leave the weyr.
