Legislative Committee
Updated 05/08/2001
(1) The crossbow issue continues to gain momentum and popularity with in
the DCNR and the state legislature. DCNR officials feel that if the
crossbow was legal to use during archery season it would be a financial
benefit to the state and serve to introduce new hunters to the sport. It's
going to be a tough obstacle to overcome but BHA reps will be at the
Conservation Advisory Board meeting in Gulf Shores along with reps from
IBEP, IBO, Pope & Young, NBEF, ASTB and many individuals who oppose the
crossbow.
(2) BHA has asked the Advisory Board to consider opening the archery
season on the second Saturday in October. Historically the archery has
opened on October 15th, regardless of the weekday. Since gun season always
opens on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the length of archery season now
varies by as much as 7 days.
