My Running home page
What do I know about running? I started running back in 1995, or so. I was overweight by about 40 pounds and I started running on Memorial Day. Six months later, I'd lost 42 pounds and I was running about 3 or four times each week at a pace of less than 8 minutes per mile. I kept running. I entered races. I enjoyed being able to fit into my old clothes.
My two greatest running accomplishments:
#1 - 5K - 20:49 (several years ago)
#2 - one month I ran over 100 miles
I still am unsure why I run - sometimes I enjoy being outside, running. Almost always, I run in the woods, or parks - I don't like to run along roads when possible. My greatest enjoyment comes after the run. I enjoy the benefits of running, which to me, include:
- much healthier lifestyle
- better sleep habits
- better digestion
- slower resting heart rate
- more active body , more energy
- more active mind
- weight control
- sense of accomplishment
- enjoyment of being outside
You Want To Start Running?
If you start running, start out slow, perhaps alternating between running and walking. Get good shoes - this is extremely important - make sure they fit and they match your foot shape - go to a fitness shoe store and make sure the sales person helping you knows how to fit for running shoes. Run for at least 20 minutes, three times a week. You really never need to go too far beyond this in order to keep in good aerobic shape - I suggest 30 to 40 minute workouts 3 or four times each week. The faster you run, the greater the benefits - push yourself hard, but don't over do it - pay attention to your heart rate. Try to run at the fastest pace you can without having to slow down to catch your breath. Slow down on hills, do whatever it takes - just do it. This may take a few weeks or months to understand and perfect, but it comes with practice. Be patient - be persistent - get results.
Running and other aerobic exercises are great for loosing weight and maintaining a healthy body, however, your body shape probably won't be affected. In order to create a strong, muscular body, click on the Strength & Fitness button below.
