CHIHUAHUA WEIGHTCHARTS

We come to the approximate size of our chihuahua puppy maturity weight by various contributing factors. Such as genetics of parents, grandparents and ancestors which is as close as you can get. (If the blood line is pure) And also the body frame of the individual puppy itself (most accurate way of determining.) We also use a chihuahua weight chart that will give us a somewhat idea of an approximate adult weight. Although the chart is not the most reliable source. But as a breeder with various size and frame sized puppies it is easy to keep a basic idea with previous pups at adulthood. This is why I try to keep in contact with new families to get the current weights of our previous pups to be able to judge somewhat as to what frame will be how large. And also to know how our babies are doing. Judging this way takes a lot of trial and error. For when a puppy has a small frame as adults they can be a heavier weight if the weight is not maintained as the puppy matures and gets in the later years. Dogs are like human's their metabolism slows down as they get older and weight gain is inevitable with a less active pet. I would suggest that if a small framed sized pet is over 5 lbs it should be checked by a vet. Health issue could be fatal for an overweight dog. As in humans it lessen the years in life. A lot of people can tell you what a puppy will weigh at adulthood but unless genetics are done on previous pet ancestors it is hard to determine and then that is not 100%. But it does give a basic idea. Two tiny dogs can throw a larger pup if it is somewhere in the parents bloodline. That is why it is so important to check out your pets bloodline if it is a tiny dog before breeding for somewhere that larger size will come thru. This calls for C-sections and also sometimes death of your pet. If ever breeding what some people call Tea cups you are putting your pet at risk if research has not been done on the bloodline and then no matter what anyone says past bloodlines could have been tapered with and the suspected dame and sire not be the actual. Nothing is concrete in the breeding. You can only go by what is told you no matter what club you are affiliated with AKC or CKC or any other. It disturbs me that so many people are looking for that "tiniest pup" for they actually do have more health issues than an average size dog. I feel through many years of growing up with my father being a dog breeder and being around that environment off and on for 43 years of my 48 years of life... I am able to better understand certain areas of breeding. If a dog is not pure bred and is bred as a pure bred somewhere down the line the truth will show up. That is why it is so important to know your breeder and also know that they knew theirs and so on. And then that is not a guarantee. To me a person who wants quality will choose a healthy pup not a runt which is what your basic Tea cups are. Anything under 3 lbs is a health risk. And breeders have to admit to that fact. Unless you are someone who knows how to care for that size dog. There are experience people out there that do know how to care for a tiny dog but if they are selling "tea cups" they need to educate the buyer as to how to care for that tiny little one. For they are like babies and require that special attention. They can not go as long a period of time without food for their blood sugar levels drop and they could die. Also breathing problems, heart problems and other issue could arise that would call for expensive vet bills. So please know what is involved before going down this avenue. I don't claim to have all the answers just like to pass on what I have learned in this area. I am still learning because I want to know. And that is the best policy if you want to know something...then research it. Hope this has been somewhat helpful to the person looking for that right pet. There are many good quality breeders out there just know who they are. And make sure they aren't in it "just for the money" but also for the love of it. It takes money to be a breeder don't get me wrong. For a good breeder will spend to have healthy dogs and pups. And that does get expensive when you have more than one dog. There is a lot of work to being a good dog breeder regardless of what anyone says. You have to love what you do to skip vacations and other outside interests at times because of the responsibilites that dog breeding demands. Also the routine of caring for your pets the way they require does get to be a routine. Same thing most everyday. This is a hard job if you are contemplating on being a good dog breeder. Not like a 9 to 5 job where you are home after work and weekend and vacation time is rest time. There is no rest or time off for a good breeder unless they hire a good sitter. My dogs are like my family. I wouldn't see leaving them with just anyone. And a vacation with 5 dogs is a job.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
AKC only allow under 6 lb. dogs to be shown. Anything over 6 lbs is disqualified. Our puppies run from 3 to 5 lbs. This chart allows you to approximate your dogs weight from birth to 18 months.
