NAWA Report 4/26/03
Reported By Jason Coleman on 4/26/03. NAWA April 26, 2003 Special Guest, Jerry "The King" Lawler NAWA hit a home run with their "Spring Stampede" show at Dillard's Music Park in Rome, GA last night. Amazing heat from start to finish for a show that lasted almost four hours. Props to Air Paris on the booking. He had his finger right on the southern style pulse of his audience. Swerves, chains and ref bumps. The crowd of 400 true marks (and I mean that as a compliment) loved it, beginning to end. Certainly, many of them were there to see Lawler, but judging from the overall response to the show, they just might come back for more. 1)Chris Vaughan & Seth Cruise & JC Sky beat Bobby Hayes & Déjà Vu & El Grande in 5:02. Vaughan was the star here. Sky never even tagged in. They went to a schmoz early to set up a sweet backdrop tope con hilo by Stevens. Heat on Cruise. Déjà Vu missed on second rope splash. Hot tag. Vaughan with dropkicks. Vaughan turned the masked dude Grande's wheelbarrow into a stunner for the win. 2) The Nightmare beat Mike Jackson in a Georgia Legends Match (9:04).Jackson is in great shape. Still doing a credible version of that flying headscissors from his heyday. Jackson did a Spoiler style rope walking spot. He had to duck his head to avoid bumping the ceiling. Nightmare took over. Jackson came up selling his shoulder after a backdrop but Nightmare didn't take advantage of it. Jackson hit a hangman neckbreaker Nightmare took a slam off the top. Jackson hit a stunner but Nightmare got a foot over the ropes. While Jackson argued with the ref, Nightmare loaded his mask with a foreign object. 1..2..3 3) Nemesis (with Daffney) beat Iceberg (with John Johnson) in 7:38. There is only man that should be at ringside with the "Inconceivable Being of Horror." Note to Jeff G. Bailey: THIS is your kind of crowd. But then this was a dream crowd for any heel manager. I never thought of a woman walking around on crutches as being hot until Daffney's ring entrance. Nemesis was the aggressor. Iceberg went up for a Nemesis back suplex. The match did a 180 turn when Iceberg clotheslined Nemesis. Iceberg dropped an Abdullah elbow. Nemesis took Iceberg off his feet with a crossbody hope spot. Johnson got involved. Nemesis tried for a slingshot sunset flip but Iceberg squashed him. Nemesis staggered Iceberg and hit a spinheel kick for a near fall. Ref bump. Johnson tripped Nemesis and Iceberg popped the crowd with his quarter ton senton backsplash. Daffney cracked Iceberg in the head with her crutch, sending him to the floor. Johnson climbed in the ring and got speared by Nemesis. Nemesis locked on the Haas of Pain. NAWA CEO, Phil Heffner DQed Iceberg due to Johnson's interference. 4) Kasey James (with Bert Prentice) beat Jamie Dundee in 7:58. This match featured "Honey Love" Prentice at his best. The heat went from great to off the charts. Jess McGrath reported that Prentice has lost 60 pounds and is working out regularly. It shows. Prentice invited the fans to fantasize about him. He pointed out two alleged lesbians a few rows back. Then the fat jokes. Dundee was doing his jailbird..um..gimmick. He took offense to something the heel section said. "If I told you to haul ass it would take two trips, buddy." James blindsided Dundee to get things started. James is a throwback heel blend of Tommy Rich and Michael Hayes. Dundee had added table weight since I last saw him but he can still go. The story was that the only way James could hang with Dundee was through liberal interference by Prentice on his behalf. At one point, Prentice jumped up on the apron and did leg raises. James hit a corner clothesline for two. Dundee got a visual fall with a sunset flip while Prentice diverted the ref's attention. Dundee hit a DDT, followed by a back elbow that knocked James out of the ring. Prentice pulled Dundee's leg as suplexed James back inside and held onto to it for the three. 5) Palm Beach Boy Scott & Desire (with Danny V) beat Jimmy Powell & Bambi in 10:03. The crowd response made this a fun comedy match. The people were there to have a good time. V acknowledged the predicament of following Prentice. "I may not be Bert Prentice, but I'm well on my way." Bambi would double on PBP behind the ref's back. Desire's attempts to return the favor on Powell backfired every time. Bambi gave PBP a bouncing crotch ride on the middle rope. Powell spanked Desire. All of this worked like a charm. Bambi hit a bulldog for a two count. Desire raked the eyes to take over. They did the deal where PBP would pumphandle Bambi's arm over his shoulder. Bambi eventually pulled the switcheroo on Desire and went to the outside to wave at PBP. The heels gave chase but Bambi crawled through their legs for the tag. Powell hit atomic drops on both into the four way. The heels tried to whip Powell and Bambi together, who avoided the bump with a dosey-do. Finish saw the ref attention' tied up with Powell and PBP on the outside. V ripped Bambi down to the mat and Desire got the pin with her feet on the ropes. ONE HOUR INTERMISSION. The line for getting autographs from The King was that freakin' long. Desire and Daffney also garnered lots of attention at the gimmick tables. 6) Chris Harris beat Chase Stevens in 13:38. Hands down best match of the night. Major league execution by guys with a major league looks. Fairly conservative match but did it ever build. This was billed as an NWA-TNA captain's match. Commentator D.D. Bussey pointed out that Air Paris was one of the original Hotshots. Steven rode Harris and slapped him. That got heat. Harris took over. Harris did a high backdrop and a clothesline over the top. Stevens was really selling. Looked like Stevens must have been watching his Ric Flair and Harley Race tapes. Harris tried an up and over move, but Steven kicked him in the nuts. Crowd really reacted to it because a) it looked good and b) it was only the second low blow off the show. Stevens used hair to cut Harris off and applied a sleeper. Harris fought up for a big lariat. Both men down. Ducking shots and running the ropes. Stevens with a flying forearm for two. Harris hit a Thesz press and pounded away. Harris used a clothesline and a bulldog for a near fall. Stevens got two with a scissors kick. Harris hit a DDT for two. Stevens hit a big superkick and covered, but Harris kicked out. Stevens went for a chair. When the ref pulled it away, Stevens clocked Harris with a chain for an apparent pin. Phil Heffner ordered the ref to search Stevens. He found the chain and called for the restart. Harris with the quick roll up 1..2..No! Stevens blocked the Catatonic and hit a DVD for another great false finish. Stevens went to use the chair again. Harris speared him bigtime and hit the Catatonic for the win. 7) Drew Delight beat Simon Sermon to win the NAWA Junior Heavyweight Title in 10:26. Sermon does a mini Steven Regal gimmick. He's about as over in the cool heel role as imaginable at this level. Sermon's personal cheering section did a human canopy over his head and chanted "UK" as he came down the aisle. They traded bitch slaps. Delight started flying. Sermon double clutched taking a clothesline over the top. Delight hit a plancha. The heel section provided Sermon with a violin and a croquet mallet to use on Delight, while the rest of the crowd chanted "queer boy sucks." Surreal and hilarious. Sermon gave Delight a sidewalk slam into the second row of chairs. Sermon did a cool surfboard crab combo that Hudson called the London Bridge. Delight went for a cradle piledriver that damn near turned into a Ganzo bomb. Sermon survived it and hit a solid neckbreaker for a near fall. Sermon applied a standing guillotine that Delight reversed for the pin. Sermon refused to shake hands. Hudson came to the ring to introduce two local deejays. Fans chanted "Mike Tenay sucks." Hudson said to give Tenay some credit. They chanted "Michael Cole sucks." Hudson agreed. 8) Chris Kamikaze & Jason Wilde beat The Centerfolds ("Skinny" Kenny & "Gigolo" John Arden) and The New Varsity Club (Ray Gordy & Jason Phoenix & Nick Rampage) to retain the NAWA Tag Team Titles in 12:25. Good match with Gordy and Kamikaze as the standout performers. Even Centerfold were funny with this crowd. "Gigolo John" pulled down his singlet to reveal the most disgusting full moon ever witnessed inside a wrestling ring. Varsity Club was doing the gimmick where any of the three can participate in the match. Varsity Club brawled with Centerfolds to set up dives by Kamikaze and Wilde. Kamikaze has no fear with the dives or the bumps. He did a springboard tumbleweed to the outside. Kamikaze hit a series of moves on Gordy, finishing with a Falcon Arrow. Gordy popped the crowd with a fisherman swinging neckbreaker variation. Wilde and Kamikaze teamed up for a tilt-a-whirl splash. John speared Kamikaze to start the best offensive series I've even seen by a Centerfold. Phoenix countered Kamikaze's triple spin tornado DDT attempt with a Northern lights into the turnbuckles. Rampage did a lousy version of the Catatonic. Kamikaze was taking heat from all sides. It circled back to Gordy and Kamikaze. Gordy did a perfect fisherman supex with a bridge. The Japanese training is so clear in his technique. Gordy went for a release German suplex. Kamikaze landed on his feet and hit a superkick. Crowd was not into Wilde's work off the hot tag. Rampage pulled John out and Phoenix hit a flying shoulder tackle on Kenny. Gordy hit a top rope splash on Kenny, but Kamikaze splashed Gordy to break up the pin. Kamikaze did a rocket launcher senton bomb on Kenny for the win. 9) Jerry Lawler beat Air Paris (with Bert Prentice) in 11:32. The NAWA Heavyweight Title belonging to Paris was not on the line. Prentice showed no mercy on ring announcer Jenn Holbrook. He said her dress looked like his living room drapes. Prentice said that after Paris whipped Lawler, Vince was going to call Paris up and bring him to RAW in Atlanta Monday night. Bert guaranteed a Paris victory, and we all know that Bert's word is as good as gold. Doesn't matter how many times I see it, I still love watching Lawler's intro. Lawler ripped on Paris and Prentice, intimating that they were more than good friends. Lawler wondered which one was the pitcher and which was the catcher. Lawler said there was no doubt Prentice was a flamer. Prentice took it as a compliment. Lawler told Paris not to hold his breath about going to RAW. They locked up. Lawler teased hitting Paris on the break but didn't. Paris took
over with slams and a hiptoss. Paris was getting cocky. Lawler blocked a hiptoss
and nailed Paris with a clothesline. Simple but so effective because of the set
up. Lawler connected with a cartoonish super wind up uppercut. Paris choked
Lawler with a chain while Prentice distracted ref Jimmy Rivers. Lawler took a
backdrop for a near fall. Paris fired punches. Lawler decked Paris with one
punch. Paris got the chain from Prentice again. Paris signaled for a piledriver,
but Lawler countered with a backdrop. Paris charged. Lawler told him to hold up
and pulled the strap down. Lawler hit a bulldog and got a huge pop with the
stunner. Prentice tried to interfere and took a big bump off the apron. Lawler
had Paris pinned after a fistdrop, but there was Prentice with the ref again.
Ref bump. Prentice held Lawler so Paris could clock him with the chain. Paris
covered for a three count, but Lawler got a foot on the ropes. Paris was too
busy celebrating with Prentice to notice the ref signaling for the match to
continue. Lawler rolled Paris up for the pin. Prentice threw a tantrum. Paris
took his frustrations out on Rivers.
