Chapter 1
Rory was sitting on the bridge, her feet dangling over the edge with her ankles
crossed. Her hands were intertwined on her lap and tears kept dripping off of
her face onto her knee, she cursed herself for wearing her mothers vintage
dress, the water stains mixed with the makeup that got caught up in the water
trail would be a pain in the neck to get out, God she couldn’t believe that tear
drop stains were the only thing that was on her mind after all that had happened
that night.
Earlier everything had been perfect. Her perfect mom, Dean the world champion in
boyfriending, and they were so very close to removing Kirk from his reign as
Dance Marathon Champion, that was until the heel broke. Her mom was in the
middle of a rant session on the unfairness of her new shoes breaking the first
time that she wore them (no matter that they were made in 1943, this was the
first time that she had worn them) when she informed Rory that she would have to
hold herself up on the floor while Luke fixed her shoe. Rory cursed herself
again, she could have held herself up for ten minutes, and she knew it, she was
just being lazy, and since she had informed her mom that if she left her alone
she would promptly and completely voluntarily fall to the floor, therefore
disqualifying her and her mom from the marathon. Her mom, of course, was too
absorbed in beating Kirk so that he would cry like a little girlie to even dream
of giving up, that she found a solution the problem, she called Dean over to
hold Rory up.
It had been almost ten minutes, and her mom would be back any second now, why
did she have to mention Jess? She knew that Dean hated Jess, she should have
just avoided the topic, she again internally kicked herself, she had been doing
a lot of that tonight. Well apparently Dean saw a little jealousy in Rory’s
tirade against Shane because when she and Jess started yell Dean abruptly broke
it off with Rory, saying that he knew what was going on, it was obvious that
Rory was into Jess, and it was plainly reciprocated, so he was sick and tired of
telling himself that it was all fine between them, and Rory should just go and
be with Jess. He was yelling so loud…and what hurt the most was that she knew he
was right. Everything he said, he was completely and utterly correct, and Rory
couldn’t take the fact that she had hurt Dean, She knew she didn’t love him, but
she never wanted to hurt him. And to make it worse, this wasn’t how she wanted
it to end between them, she wanted it to be on her terms, and she wanted to
explain herself and tell Dean that she had indeed once loved him. She didn’t
want all of the screaming and yelling, and she especially didn’t want all of the
screaming and yelling to take place in with the entire town playing audience.
Rory shifted and sniffled, she looked at her reflection in the water, and for
some reason that she couldn’t entirely explain, she recognized the girl staring
back. She had expected to see a girl who she was foreign to, someone completely
unrecognizable, because the girl she expected had lied to her boyfriend and
herself for months, she was supposed to feel terrible and guilty, and it didn’t
stop there, she had also lied to her mom, and to Luke, the town…and Jess. Oddly
enough, the girl she saw was feeling…relieved. She was happy to be able to be
honest to everyone, starting with herself. OK, deep breath, and now she let the
walls down, and all of this unexpected emotion came through, along with another
wave of tears. She loved Jess, that was all that emotion boiled down to, she had
loved him since the moment he suggested climbing through her window and bailing
on dinner almost a year and a half ago.
The bridge creaked, Oh God. Oh no. No, she wasn’t ready to be honest with him
yet, but at the same time part of her was longing for it, that was why she had
chosen this spot to run to, the bridge was kind of her and Jess’ unofficial
spot, she knew he would find her there. That was where they had had their
picnic, and where Jess had gotten pushed in the lake by Luke. The bridge creaked
again as he took another step forward and stopped. Rory looked away as Jess
searched for words. He finally settled with “Dean’s a jerk,” ‘that was weak’ he
thought, she obviously already came to that revelation on her own, so he decided
to back his statement up “The guys a total jerk” o yea, this was going well, it
was just he had so much he wanted to say, ok one more time “Yellin at you like
that, breaking up in front of everybody. Guys a total jerk” He rolled his eyes,
knowing he was definitely not making progress, it was her turn. “No hes not….he
was right” Jess froze He was right??? Rory thought he was right? Maybe her
perception of him was different then he assumed. Rory decided continue, not
noticing Jess’ hesitation “Everything he said, all those things about you and
me, all those things about me…sniffle…lying to him, and messing with his head…he
was right” and with that she looked at him. ‘Wow’ he thought he wasn’t sure what
to say, he was toying with some possibilities when Rory, obviously thinking he
was hesitating said “Well, wasn’t he?” Jess was still speechless “Fine! He was
right about me then, now go away” and she looked at her shoes, a lone tear
rolled down her face and dripped into the water.
“He was right…about….about everything” it was so easy, why couldn’t he just say
that to begin with? She looked at him “So, what now?” She asked. “So your
definitely broken up with Dean?” he asked “Yea, definitely broken up with Dean”
she almost whispered it “Ok, I gotta go take care of something now” he said. And
that was it.
