Chapter 2
“Rory, hunny, what happened? When I got back Patty said you had left and
something had gone wrong with you and Dean.” Lorelai blurted out as she rushed
in the door. She found Rory sitting on the couch reading The Grapes Of Wrath for
about the ninetieth time. Rory looked up and closed her book, she didn’t want
her mom to see the notes in the margins or she would know that the book was from
Jess, and her mom hated Jess. Then, on an afterthought, opened it again, she
didn’t have to hide this anymore. Lorelai saw this little maneuver and
immediately focused on the book, hmm notes in the margins…Jess. Ugh she hated
that kid. “Jess’s book?” Lorelai asked stiffly “Yes it is” Rory replied “And
mom, I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Jess now” Lorelai looked at
her, what was she talking about? “What are you talking about?” ‘Ok, I’m so
supposed to be witty,’ she thought, then realized from the look on Rory’s face
that maybe now wasn’t the time for swift comebacks. Rory then proceeded to tell
her mom about what had happened earlier that night, with every word Lorelai’s
mouth dropped another notch, inching closer and closer to her lap. As soon as
Rory was done Lorelai snapped her mouth shut again. “So it finally happened,
your finally with Jess” she asked “Uh yea, I am, at least I think, we haven’t
had that talk yet” Rory explained “Aw Rory, hunny, I should explain to you that
babies come from the stork, that’s not Jess’ job.” Lorelai made a mock pouty
face.
She had of course meant the talk that would go something like “Where do we
stand…are we officially together?” but as soon as her mom did that Rory knew
everything was going to be ok, her mom wouldn’t joke unless she was being
herself, you know, a person who usually existed only in the absence of
seriousness. She decided now would be a good time to end the discussion, ok new
topic “So I’m assuming that Kirk won again?” not the best choice Rory concluded
as she saw her mom get all serious again “Yes he did, and I don’t want to talk
about it, I still have the theme from Rocky playing over and over in my head”
she said “Its that bad?” asked Rory “Ohh yea, sleep disturbing nightmares and
possible intensive therapy are forth coming.” Good, serious moment over.
