Chapter 3

Rory limped into Luke’s the next afternoon after school. Sucky day, two A-minuses and Paris had called an emergency meeting of the student body presidents just so that she could circle their table and talk about their plans for the next semester, and being that it was only a month into the first semester, everyone got a little bored. Then as soon as Paris noticed Louise polishing her nails, she extended the meeting half an hour just to yell at them about the importance of attentiveness at these meetings. Her day instantly brightened though because she saw Jess walking down the stairs. He stopped in his tracks the second he saw her. Then he smiled and went back upstairs. Rory was sitting their, slightly confused until she heard the stairs shaking and saw Jess re-emerge carrying something. “C’mon” he said, taking her hand in his and they walked out the door.

“Ok, where exactly are you taking me?” she asked, smiling all the way, and then she saw the bridge. It should have been weird, I mean exactly twenty-four hours ago she had been sitting here crying over Dean, but oddly enough, it felt right. Jess sat down and opened a book “Sense and Sensibility?” Rory asked “I’ve already read that, about thirty times” she said as she sat down between his legs and leaned back into his chest. He smelled very good, like peppermint and cheeseburgers, he was definitely a diner boy. “Yes I know you have, but I’m almost sure that my perception is different from yours, and I also brought some Hemingway” Rory looked at him and made a face “I know, you hate him, but I am going to try my hardest to find something he has written that will please you” She smiled and got comfy as he began to read to her. He did make some good points, but most of the two hours that they sat there reading and discussing the two books was spent just enjoying each other’s company. She looked at her watch “Oh crap” she let out as she noticed the time “Ok, apparently you feel strongly about the symbolism, but I don’t think it was exactly crap” Jess joked “No, no I agree, good use of symbolism, but its six o’clock, I was supposed to be at home, I was supposed to have gotten movies and enough junk food, that if consumed at the rate we usually do could kill a small elephant and this was all supposed to be done about thirty minutes ago!!” She jumped up and looked down at him as he stood up. “Rory, let me help you, I can get the movies, just give me some titles, and you get the junk then we can meet and I’ll walk you home, and then get back to Luke’s.” He smiled that knee-weakening smile of his, and she smiled back “No” she said “No? I’m confused, I’m just trying to help you avoid conflict, I think we both know that if your mother is deprived of junk-“ she cut him off “No, I don’t mean no, I mean no like you shouldn’t just walk me home, you should stay” she said “Stay?” he asked “Stay” she stated confidently. “C’mon, if we’re gonna be together then you and her are going to have to get along, and now would be as good a time as any to start.” She looked at him, she had obviously read his mind, now she was just wondering what he would say. “Ok, if you want, I’ll be there.” She smiled widely, “Ok, I’m going to go get the junk, you get the movies, I don’t care which ones, surprise me, meet me at the gazebo, soon to, like ten minutes ago soon” she said and ran off the bridge, but before Jess could move she ran back and kissed him, it started out as a nice, sweet kiss, but they both deepened it, making it slightly more passionate then you would expect from a second kiss. They pulled apart and smiled “I missed that” Rory whispered, “Yeah, me too”
