Chapter 4

The door creaked as they tramped in out of the rain, it had suddenly started to pour on their way home and both of them were absolutely soaked, Jess’ sweater was stuck to him and Rory had puddles challenging the great lakes in her saddle shoes. “Jeez” they both sighed “I’m gonna go change” said Rory as she brought the food into the kitchen “Just make yourself at home.” She called as the door to her room closed behind her. She was back out in ten minutes in a pair of grey sweats and a baggy U2 shirt, she was carrying a towel, another pair of sweats and a huge T-shirt. She found Jess standing on the tile floor with paper towels underneath him and laughed “I didn’t want to get everything all wet, so I just decided to stand here until you got out and told me what to do” he said, she held out the clothes “Purple?” he asked jokingly “They say ‘Rock star’ on the butt” now he was teasing her “Hey, its either that or stand there all night” she smiled, pushing the clothes into his hands. “Just point me to a bathroom” he said. She nodded at her bathroom and he walked over and closed the door behind him. She smiled to at the thought of Jess with her Rock Star sweats on as she emptied all of the food into bowls, she was in the middle of adding marshmallows to the M&Ms when she heard the door open. “Hunny I’m home!!” he mom called out as she rushed into the kitchen, sopping wet. “Oh hey….shamu” she smiled at her mom, and the puddle that was forming around her on the floor. “Stop mocking, I bet you looked exactly the same when you got home! You just got a head start on the changing, not fair!” she joked and headed toward the stairs and was halfway there when Rory called out “Mom, wait!” her mom stopped and returned to the kitchen “Yea?” she asked “We have company tonight” she said “And who is this company we’re having?” her mom asked “Jess” Rory said smiling. “Oh, Jess” her mom said, obviously not pleased, “Your not happy” Rory stated “Oh no, I am, where is he, by the way” Lorelai falsely brightened, she knew her daughter was with Jess, and Jess made her happy, so that was important. “Hes changing, we were soaked when we got home so I gave him some clothes” she smiled again at the thought of what she had given him to wear, he hadn’t complained about the shirt, but about ten seconds before her mom walked it she heard him groan, she was sure she knew why, she shirt said “PMS…Pamper Me Sweetly” on it. “What did you give him to wear?” asked her mom, but Rory didn’t get a chance to answer, the bathroom door opened.

Jess was standing there in front of them, and both of them were completely speechless “Oh, Oh My God, Oh wow” said Lorelai Rory just smiled stupidly, obviously trying to hold back torrents of laughter. They just stood there for a few more seconds before Lorelai got that look on her face where Jess knew that she had something good to say, but was holding back “Go ahead...say it, if you stay like that all night your head is gonna implode.” Still just a stupid smile “C’mon I know your thinking something, what is it” he said “Oh no, I was just thinking about how this moment has made putting up with all of the aftermath of your pranks worthwhile” said Lorelai, and they both burst into hysterics. “Okay , okay, enough already I know I look stupid, but if I weren’t soaking and if I didn’t like you as much as I do Rory, then there would be no way I would be caught dead in this” Jess said. Still no response, any more and they were going to give themselves a stroke, and before he knew it Lorelai had snapped a Polaroid of him and was running into the living room. “Ok, ok, enough, give me that picture” he said, out of breath, but the girls had ganged up against him and were holding it hostage behind the couch, and every time he tried to get it they bombarded him with soggy marshmallows that had been dipped in Coke. They finally reached an agreement that the picture could be kept as long as it was never revealed to anyone else. They all stood up and Jess knelt down to start the movie. Upon seeing “Rock Star” on Jess’ butt, the girls erupted in laughter again and were only subdued when the movie started, and when Jess threatened to spray them with Cheese Whiz.

The rest of the evening was great, Lorelai could not believe how much fun she was having! She was stunned at Jess’ complete turn around, he was being warm and joking around her, but then she figured that this was the other side of him that Rory had seen all along. Jess was turning out to be a really nice guy…shock! And she could see in their eyes how much he and Rory liked each other, they had such a deep connection and she saw something in her daughter that she had never seen before, a sort of openness, confidence and love that had never existed with Dean. It was crazy for her to think this after all that had happened, but maybe Jess and Rory were meant for each other, they obviously brought out the best in each other. Lorelai tuned back in as Jess was doing a fantastic impression of an Oompa Loompa, they all laughed and Rory said “I’m gonna go make some more popcorn. She left the room and there were Jess and Lorelai, alone.

Lorelai suddenly zapped off the TV and looked at Jess “Jess” she said he got a worried expression on his face, had he done something wrong? “Ok, I’m gonna give you the same talk I gave Dean when he and Rory first started dating, and that is that I love Rory, this whole town does, and if you come along and hurt her, then you have nowhere to turn. Rory is a very special girl, and the fact that she sees something in you does give you some brownie points, and I know that you and I have had our differences, but I am prepared to overlook those, and give you a chance, but break her heart, and I’ll kill you” she finished, Jess had listened intently, and when he opened his mouth Lorelai expected some sarcastic comment but no, “I understand how you feel, I really do, but I want you to know that I’m not as bad as I come off, and I am grateful that your giving me another chance to prove this to you. I also want you to know that I like Rory very much, and there is never anything that I would do to hurt her, and I wouldn’t let anything happen to her. I know it is hard for you to trust me, but I think that in time you will see that you can.” Wow, this kid really liked Rory, he sounded so sincere that Lorelai knew right then that everything would be alright. So she switched the TV back on and the two of them commenced stuffing themselves ad Rory walked back in.
