Chapter 2

What was that? Why was he acting like this? So many questions and absolutely no answers, Rory’s mind raced as she ran all the way home. She dumped her stuff onto the coffee table and crashed into the couch. She lay there for a long time, just thinking, she knew she had to talk to him despite his chilly attitude, but not right now, it would have to wait a day or so. She had to plan what she was going to say, and take care of a few things first.

Dean was sitting on the Gilmore couch next to Rory, he was fuming, and crying. “You kissed Jess?” he finally croaked out. He had just listened as Rory told him about the events which had taken place at Sookie’s wedding. She nodded at him shyly as they sat there for a few moments in an awkward silence. Rory decided to break the tension by speaking again “Dean, I never meant for any of this to happen, I would never hurt you on purpose, it just happened and I think it was a result of building feelings. I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you about this sooner, I just didn’t know how to. You were so good to me, and you deserved more then this. I want you to know that I really did love you, and they have not yet found a word to describe how sorry I am and how awful I feel for putting you through all of this.” She said quietly, all the while looking at her hands, which were twisting in discomfort on her knees. She was choking back tears, she rubbed her eyes firmly, ‘No, I promised myself I wouldn’t cry, it will only make this worse, it will only make me second guess myself’ she thought, and she suppressed the stream of sobs that was threatening to come flowing out. “You did love me,” Dean said quietly, “Did, meaning you don’t anymore?” he asked, tears now free falling down his cheeks. Rory just looked at him and there was enough in her gaze to tell him it was true, but he didn’t want to believe it, he couldn’t lose her. He was about to speak but she beat him to it “I’m so sorry Dean, I never wanted it to end this way.” It was all she could say without bursting into tears. He nodded “So that’s it, it’s over, after all we have been through, it’s just over?” he asked, she nodded, she couldn’t speak, it was to hard. He stood up abruptly and walked out the front door.

As soon as the door was safely shut Rory let the tears come flowing out of her eyes. She couldn’t even understand why she was crying, she knew she didn’t love Dean, but maybe it was the finality that was now facing her that scared her so much. The tears just kept coming as she walked into her room. She sat on her bed for a few minutes to calm herself, and when she had finally dammed the river she leaned over and picked up “Howl” form her bedside table. She flipped through it, reading the notes that Jess had put in the margins for her for the hundredth time. She didn’t even know why she bothered anymore, she could recite every word he had put there for the thousands of times she had read them that summer.  She put the book down and looked at her bed, it was so inviting. It was only 7P.M., but suddenly she was more tired then she had ever been before.
