Chapter 4
Rory ran all the way home, but wasn’t even aware that she was moving. She
couldn’t feel her feet pounding on the pavement and her lungs taking short,
shallow breaths. All she could feel was her heart being blown apart in her
chest. She got home and slammed the door behind her, she began to run to her
room, but before she could make it there the pain became too great. She just
collapsed into tears on the floor of the kitchen. She couldn’t believe it, she
wouldn’t. She had felt it last summer, the sparks that flew between them when
they kissed. And she had always felt the chemistry they shared whenever they
were together. And she could still see it in his eyes. It was love. She just
couldn’t understand how he could possibly deny it, and the fact that he did
really hurt, like physically she had this pain in the pit of her stomach and it
was almost unbearable. She knew he felt the same way. She had been sitting
there numbly for almost 45 minutes trying to think when suddenly she realized
what was wrong, she could still see the love in his eyes, but now that love was
coupled with fear and hurt, and now she understood why. She knew why all of the
walls that he had let down for her were suddenly rebuilt, he was scared! She
couldn’t believe that she hadn’t seen it before, the fear in his eyes was there
because he didn’t want to get hurt, to get his heart broken again. And she felt
terrible for contributing to this pain. She knew how hard things had been for
him, how many times that his mom had let him down, and how many times the people
of this town had hurt him by completely disregarding his good side, what she had
done to him must have crushed his last straw. That was the only explanation for
why his feelings toward her had changed so drastically in the last three months.
She knew she had to do something to make him rediscover the feelings he had
buried, and she knew exactly what it was. She got up, wiped away the tears, and
went to find him.
