One Spirit

John 4:24 (NIV) God is spirit and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

Unlike the KJV, the word “spirit” in the NIV here above is correctly not capitalized since it indicates the material God is made of – it is not His title. (Actually, in the original text nothing was capitalized or punctuated.) This verse tells us “God is spirit” as a table may be wooden or a ring may be made of gold. "Spirit" is the very substance of God.

Originally there was the one “Spirit of God” (Gen 1:2), existing eternally as the Spirit of the Triune God. The “Spirit of God” has now changed by being processed via the incarnation of Jesus of Nazareth. The Spirit of the eternal Triune God now, since the death and resurrection of Jesus, includes the humanity of the resurrected Jesus (Rom 1:3-4). The Spirit of the Triune God now bears all that Jesus of Nazareth was and endured during His time on earth in the body of His humiliation.

The limitless “Spirit of God” in Jesus of Nazareth endured the death of the cross and raised Jesus from the dead (Rom 8:11), then becoming “the life-giving spirit” (1Cor 15:45b). Thus Paul writes, “Now the Lord is that spirit” (1Cor 3:17). “The Spirit” now is “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:2a), which is the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:19 (AMP) [That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!

Thus, the one “Spirit of God” (Eph 4:4) was processed to become “the Spirit of life” in the resurrected Christ Jesus. Jesus, through resurrection came to His spirit-form, then able to be dispensed or deposited into every justified believer’s human spirit, such that they are become as "one Spirit" (1Cor 6:17).

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 1Corinthians 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

Please note these terms used in the verses below; “the Father”… “his Spirit”… “Christ”… “the fulness of God.” These are all components of the one Spirit in Christ who now indwells the believer’s heart (Eph 3:17).

Ephesians 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Ephesians 3:16-19 That he (God the Father) would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; ¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, ¹⁸ May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; ¹⁹ And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.  

A person cannot become one of God’s children unless and until He is rebirthed by receiving “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:2a) into his human spirit (John 3:6). Romans 8:9-10 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ¹⁰ And if Christ be in you…

God, who “is spirit,” was one with Jesus of Nazareth (John 10:30). John tells us God was manifested in the incarnated flesh body of Jesus of Nazareth who is called “the Word” (John 1:1). Paul confirms this in 1Tim 3:16, indicating that God did not remain solely in His original spirit-form. Paul writes “God was manifest in the flesh.”  “the Word (Jesus) was made (became) flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Jesus of Nazareth was God; thus, “the Spirit of God was in and one with Jesus of Nazareth.

John 3:34 For he (Jesus) whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

The Son was eternally in heaven “in the beginning,” that is the beginning that had no beginning (John 1:1). John 1:1 actually refers to a time before Genesis 1:1. At His incarnation Jesus of Nazareth had “the Spirit of God” the Father in and one with Him. From verse 34 above, we see that God did not give Jesus of Nazareth just a portion of “the Spirit,” but all of the Spirit of God. In verse 35, we learn that “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” All the things of God now reside in the Son, in the Lord Jesus Christ, who dwells within every believer. The “one Spirit” of God in Christ is the mystery of godliness that has come to dwell in believers. Colossians 1:27 … this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
