Products you might never assume were dangerous

Welcome to my "tell the truth on 'em" portion of the web site. This is where I plan on placing images of products you may use on occasion that contain asbestos though you may have had no clue.

My Fireplace

At the lower end of the fire can be seen some individual points of light. Those are small pieces of vermiculite glowing orange/yellow. Below the level of the natural gas flame they appear as  small gray nuggets.  Vermiculite is the asbestos product that put Libby, Montana on the map and on the EPA's radar.  This was in the house when we bought it and  come to think of it, the disclosure statement said that there was no asbestos in the house. Hmmmmm.........................

Spackling Compound

Sorry it's not easier to read, but in the middle of the eighth line down, magnesium aluminum silicate is listed. That would be the chemical name for asbestos. Why do you suppose they use the chemical name and not the trade name?  They do warn you to wet sand, but if they told you this product could cause you an agonizing death, do you suppose it would sell  as well?  Perhaps a little too much truth in advertising.
