DOGS lp cover, love those 70s bellbottoms !
The DOGS were an underground phenomenon in IOWA during the 70s, they were a 3 piece band who played loud, raw, pre-punk, if you like the STOOGES, and the u.k. bands like THIRD WORLD WAR, and more specifically the HAMMERSMITH GORILLAS,CRUSHED BUTLER, etc. then you'll love this band, one can also hear a 60s garage influence on some numbers, this band's sound indeed was based in the garage, the band consisted of ;
JODY KOENIG - Guitar/Vocals
OLE TORVIK - Bass/Vocals
and ERIK BERG - Drums/Vocals
GREG KNIPE was the original drummer, but he left early on to drum for CONWAY TWITTY...........their discography consists of a single released in ' 77 - 'ROT-n-ROLL / TEEN SLIME ', and an lp, some of which dates back to ' 73 recordings......onto the reviews
1 'ROT-n-ROLL'
GREAT pre-punk number full of teenage angst, electric guitar progression, some vocals emphasized with screams........' WELL HEY LITTLE BAD BREATH I GOT THE HOTS FOR U, CAUE U GIVE ME SOMETHING NOBODY ELSE COULD DO .......( ? , ? ) CAME FROM A PART OF U..........I KNOW EVERYTHINGS GONNA ROT,I KNOW EVERYTHINGS GONNA ROT, I KNOW EVERYTHINGS GONNA ROT, .........YOUR A PUBLIC ENEMY'........
2 'MAN IS NOT AN ANIMAL '
subdued, darker sound than the opener, VERY GOOD number , some lyrics suggest a sci-fi theme.............overall PRIMITIVE sound with POUNDING drums.......' THIS SATELLITE IT LIES AND TRIES TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WRONG,..............WERE FORCED TO THINK.....some of the lyrics are a bit hard to decipher, but the music stands out on this one as an interlude with pounding drums comes in with the guitar and bass sending out electric signals while JODY the singer screams over and over 'MAN IS NOT AN ANIMAL ANYMORE, MAN IS NOT AN ANIMAL ANYMORE' ( categorize this band as true 70s lost -punk )
3 'HORROR HOUSE'
this one is bass HEAVY pre-punk.......with some excpetional bass playing at that.......'SPLISH, SPLASH BOTTLES CRASH ALL OVER TOWN, STRIFE RIFE IN THE NIGHT GETTING ME DOWN, I SEE SOME KIDS I HOPE THERE ALIVE, I HOPE THEY DON' T KILL ME, I'M JUST 25, ............I'VE GOT NOTHING TO DO, NOTHING TO DO !..........MY MIND IS FRIED I GOTTA HIDE............
4 'FREAKIN ON THE STREETS'
this one sounds a lot like the sound that the HAMMERSMITH GORILLAS had, they were a u.k. band featuring JESSE HECTOR ( see page 21 of the 70s invasion for more info ), again u can hear the pounding drums with razor sharp guitar riffs......' I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE CITIES AND THE WAY THEY SMELL, AND WHEN I TRIED TO ( ? )............HE SAID HE ROCKS THE SKY AND I'M FREAKIN' ON THE STREETS, VOMIT ON HIS FEET'..............( later )............. ' AND YOUR WALKIN' THE STREETS AND THE PEOPLE PASS U BY'..........
Love those 70s bellbottoms :)
5 ' WHEN A YOUNG MAN'
GREAT song with that chopper guitar sound just like that guitar playing one hears on 'ASCENSION DAY' by THIRD WORLD WAR, ( see the link at the bottom for the DOGS and it says there was even a friend whom the band called CHOPPER......hhhhhhmmmmmm ) , this song too has a dark sound similiar to 'man is not an animal'..........the lyrics suit the bane fine as they are the kind u would find on old 70s punk records.........' WHEN A YOUNG MAN DID GET ANGRY, HE WOULD STRIKE OUT, BUT NO MORE INSTITUTIONS, DROVE HIM CRAZY NOW THEY PAY HIM, SO NO MORE,................... WHEN A YOUNG MAN'.......
6 ' X - RAY ME BABY '
detriot infleunce here, more specifically a STOOGES influnece with sci-fi lyrics.......' YOUR BLUE GREEN EYES ARE FILLED WITH SPIES,......................................................I JUST STARE AT MY FACE, U SEND OUT A TRACE, TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF ME AS U SCAN MY VEINS, I CAN HEAR THE SOULS OF A HIGH ORCHESTRA FREQUENCY..................X - RAY ME BABY' !
7 ' TEEN SLIME'
the title track is a solid rocker straight from the gutter with a 60s garage influence......' GOT NO FEELING IN MY HEART, THE PEOPLE TRY AND STAND APART, TRY LIKE THEY TRY AND BE SO KIND, WELL SOMEONE SCREAMS I GOT NO SLIME' !.............................' WALK DOWN THE STREET PASS AN ALLEY MAN'...................( later ) ........'MY SWEATY BRAIN, MY SWEATY BRAIN KEEPS SCREAMING TAKE YOUR NEEDLES OUT OF ME' !

'Cooking Cows'
When I was a student at the Culinary Institue of America in Hyde Park, New York, I learned to identify body parts by their newly given English and French names. Speak French and all things sound delicious.
Dine on the sliced flesh from an innocent baby cow's foreleg, and you've eaten "veal." Eat a pig's tummy, and you've eaten bacon. Her posterior (tooshie, ass, butt) is called ham. Eat the cow's shoulder and you chew on chuck. The fleshy cut of meat anterior to her genitals is called flank.
Does it sound disgusting? The author writes:
"Richly satisfying as beef and veal cheeks are, I could eat the pork version all night." Oh, if great white sharks could talk. Is there anything as wonderful as human cheek? Do sharks prefer orators or mutes?
They eat dogs in Korea, and cats in Southeast Asia. With a bit of Bordelaise sauce, what gourmand among us could tell the difference?
Baby male cows and mother cows all share the same fate. Chew on that as you read today's New York Times recipe for cheekiness. The author concludes: "As for aesthetics, you'll have to get over your squeamishness about difficult body parts like tongue and brain and pancreases: after all, once the animal has given himself-herself up for your delectation, it's not really fair to him-her ?Eracist really-to embrace the rib-eye but shun the nasty parts."
Perhaps Jonathan Reynolds can visit a slaughterhouse and see how readily these gentle cows give themselves up for human euphoria. I neither wish to dine on cheeks nor filet mignon. I will never again eat their faces.
Death, pain, and torture, by any other name, cannot sanitize the great injustice we do to animals. Do not invite me to a dinner party where cheeks are served. I vow not to hold my tongue.
Note: The author reveals that cheeks are available at Frank's Butcher Shop in Manhattan, 212-685-3451. Frank should enjoy the publicity.
One last dish, taken from my copy of the great French cookbook, Larousse Gastronomique. Please pass the Animelles a la crè¥. For those of you who lack the skill to understand culinary French, that's testicles in cream sauce (page 665). I am profoundly disappointed in those people who cut them, clean them, cook them, consume them, and cater to the human whims that create an appetite for sperm-producing organs. (Forgive me. I wrote that tongue in cheek!)
Bon apetit.
