Short visitor report American cemetery at Margraten.

Today (02-07 07) will we for the first time a visit pay to the grave of Harold Hess, which us are assigned by foundation adoptiegraven margraten: (click on photograph)

It is today cold, rather windy and rainy with imminent dark clowtes. Already sick we goes up tho cemetery and direct you are already referred to war activities of several divisies, by means of visitor hall with beautiful partition plates with attack strategy and of course the ereplein. There you in a certificate get assigned graveindication, multitude you in fact nearly directly to the grave, but are it impressive that your vele hundreds of sepulchre toes ivv among other things white kruizen passed.

With our family we stand just as quiet at this idea that they have helped with to country also our and Europe to have delivered in commonly. Because of this we stand there but nevertheless … ….!!

29th infantery division, 115th regiment(29th ID patch) which on 6 June 1944 took part in the battle for Normandië, coming from the basis in shot country. These 115the regiment around 11.00 those mornings as the so-called second golf would come to shore on the Omaha beach and especially provide the first golf (116the regiment) with among other things. food, ammunition and other required material, of course had fight regiment also its hard against the duitsers. In afterwards the next months 115the the regiment would participate with among other things. 116the the regiment the route to occupies France and free also Belgium and the Netherlands to make, with among other things. the release of the borough SAINT. Lo in passage Normandië, on 18 July. Harold have eventually died somewhere in the fight around the Rurh area on the border of the Netherlands and Germany on Sunday 19 November 1944 and let this nou exactly 50 years for our wedingday but especially of course the wedingnight after. We married on 18 November 1994 !!

We put the boeketje rozen at its grave and give to this a satisfied feeling crazily enough. Wind facing looks around we and appears that almost nobody is present and then…. the American and Dutch volkslied plays the carillon!! this is moment of kippenvel feeling. Then we run to the ereplein and still just as looking round, you that this idea in ere realises must kept become, what we remain as a family certainly of plan! Ore son Dylan adopted this grave !

Then directly decided sepulchres still two adopt, each for one of our 3 children. (total therefore three adoption sgraves) here too we will love your as much as possible on altitude!! PFC Herbert R. Berger was Private First Class in the 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division en KIA ON 25 April 1945, with Bronze Star en Purple Heart.

T.SGT Robert J.Fitzgerald was Technisch Sergeant in het 557th Bomber Squadron, 387th Bomber Group, Medium en KIA on 21 March 1945. Robert was radio operator with the B-26 G 43-34218 code IH:E from the 1st Pathfinder Squadron 9th AF. They flew on mission to Germany as Lead Pathfinder in formation 387th BG Marauders. They got a flak hit in the navigatoncompartiment. Robert was dead and the navigator Lt. Dale was wounded.
