Gary H. Baise

Gary H. Baise brings a wide range of government and private practice experience to Baise & Miller. He joined the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney and special assistant in the Civil Division in 1969. In 1970, Mr. Baise became the first chief of staff to the first U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator and then became director of EPA's Office of Legislation. This office was responsible for obtaining passage of the Administration's major legislative initiatives for regulating water pollution, noise pollution, and pesticides. Starting in 1973, Mr. Baise served as Executive Assistant to the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and later became the Associate Deputy Attorney General for the Department of Justice. He also served as acting Deputy Attorney General from October 1973 to April 1974.

Mr. Baise was a founder of the law firm of Ruckelshaus, Beveridge & Fairbanks and was responsible for developing and representing a major share of the firm's industrial, commercial, and state government clients. He has represented port authorities, housing and commercial developers, municipalities, a shipbuilder, and the pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, steel, farm and construction equipment, and chemical industries. Mr. Baise has served as a Corporate Officer and Vice President for External Affairs for Browning-Ferris Industries, a Fortune 500 company engaged in solid and hazardous waste disposal and treatment, where he helped address the Corporation's potential criminal liabilities.

Currently Mr. Baise serves as Chairman of the State Air Control Board and Vice-Chairman of the State Water Control Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mr. Baise is a member of the Ocean Spray Cranberry Cooperative Board of Directors where he serves on the audit committee. He is the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Farm Foundation amd the Board of Visitors for the Indiana University School of Public Policy and Environmental Affairs. He is the owner of Baise Farms in Illinois. Mr. Baise has authored numerous publications and received the Arthur S. Fleming Award in 1972 as one of the ten Outstanding Young Americans in Federal Service.
