There were two semi trailer buses in Newcastle between 1944 and 1948.These were the only two operated by the Government, although but private operators had many semi trailer buses. The prime movers were Ford 51800 models fitted with Ford "Mercury" V8 petrol engines. The semi-trailer body was built on a steel underframe with a composite braced construction body and built by the department. They were licenced to carry 48 seated and 32 standing. Destination and route numbers were provided across the front of the body. The units were painted green with cream windows.745 arrived in Newcastle in August, 1944 and 760 arrived during September, 1944. They operated at peak periods no Route 103, Pacific Street, Newcastle to port Waratah ( BHP) during their lifetime. They operated this route because they were suited for flat terrain and wide roads. The two buses were withdrawn from service during July, 1948 and twelve months later were sold to a private Sydney operator, Trailer Tours.
