The Philippines is similar to the United States form of government. An elected president with a fixed term heads the country. Currently the president is elected every six years and he/she can only govern for one term. The elected president exercises control with the help of cabinet members who handles different government portfolio in serving the people.
There are three major branches in this government: the executive branch led by the elected president, the legislative composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives who are all elected by the people, and, the judicial composed of the Chief Justice and 14 associate justices.
A local mayor head with a mandate from the voting public heads each city. The elected mayor is assisted by councilors who represent the people on a per district level. Helping them in their effort to maintain peace and order and economic growth in their locality, are the “barangay” leaders. This is the smallest form of government in Philippine society. Barangay leaders are also elected by the people and also have fixed terms.
