Nancy Glover
Nancy - May 2002 Nancy - Feb. 2004

Nancy never fought much of a weight problem as a child, however, shortly after getting married in 1973, the weight gain hit with a vengeance. No matter what she did, nothing helped the situation. She tried Weight Watchers a number of times, and was actually fairly successful, but as soon as she hit a plateau, she became discouraged and fell off the wagon. She was also rather successful with Diet Center, but after reaching her goal with a sixty-pound loss, the weight quickly came back. Her most successful dieting came when her endocrinologist put her on Redux, a prescription diet drug. Again, she lost almost one hundred pounds, but had to stop taking the drug when the federal government recalled it. She was then put on Meredia, but the drug did not work for her, it caused her to gain weight. Her doctor then suggested she work with an Atkins type diet, and severely restricts her carbohydrate intake. That diet worked in part, until boredom set in and she wanted more variety in her food choices. Nancy, who was extremely miserable and well past her point of frustration, prayed to be granted just one wish-------to be thin again. Little did she know how that wish would be answered?  Her journey is as follows:

Approximately three years ago, Nancy reluctantly had to change doctors when hers departed the area. She was devastated, since she dreaded working with a new doctor, who would surely chastise her for being morbidly obese. And true to form, the first words out of the new doctor's mouth were, "you should strongly consider obesity surgery". Nancy became so upset, that she reluctantly considered changing doctors. But for some reason, she faithfully remained with her doctor, all the while doing extensive research on the Internet as to just what obesity surgery was all about. Nancy had wrongly believed that obesity surgery was the worst thing that she could do to her body, and would surely result in life-long misery. However, within a year, she became convinced that bariatric surgery was indeed the right choice for her. But, before she could commit, she demanded the full support of her family. She quickly earned their backing, which became paramount to her successful journey.

With a list provided by her insurance company, Nancy began to research her choice of surgeons. With full support and recommendation of her doctor, she decided on a Bariatric surgeon from Tampa, Florida, Michele M. Murr, M.D. (pronounced "Moore"). It took approximately eight months from the initial orientation that most surgeons require including the extensive medical testing that just seems to never end; in order to finally hear those wonderful words: "Your insurance company has approved your surgery, how soon would you like to schedule?"

On December 3, 2002, Nancy's surgeon performed a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric procedure, resulting in minimal scarring and a rapid recovery. She is now about fifty pounds from her goal weight, dropping well over 100 pounds in a year's time. Nancy feels strongly that her decision to have Bariatric surgery is without a doubt the best decision she has ever made. She is also totally indebted to her doctor who first suggested the surgery, and most grateful that she's been given a second chance at life.

Nancy is now an advocate for Bariatric surgery, supporting several newly found friends through the procedure. She teaches that success with the surgery will only come with a healthy attitude; otherwise all other efforts will be in vain. Nancy is one of the first members of our support group and is always willing to answer questions and provide support to our pre-ops and post-ops.
