ALLEGORY TO MANKIND
by Teresita Perez
Sixty centuries ago,
when men lived one thousand years,
when cool breeze caressed the planet,
air-conditioned atmosphere;
and a dew dampened the earth,
quenching its thirst every morning;
and palpable was perfection;
no danger, threat, fear or warning;
for nature dispersed perfume;
sacred, sweet, pure her condition,
man again confronted God,
rebelled with a proud decision,
to delve and pursue the structure
of nature's astute design
to destroy at their foundation,
authentic blueprints divine.
Faring to amalgamate
transgressing the laws of earth,
without respect, awe or love,
essentially mock its birth,
man entered the Master's realm
becoming a cynic traitor
while nature fell victim of
an usurper and dictator.
Cain, man of the fields and farmlands,
now began experimenting
with molecular behavior,
exchanging and rearranging,
giving birth to morose science,
even to himself unknown,
while his character evolved
to become the devil's clone.
Manipulating life's basics,
animal cells into plants,
grafting unrelated species,
new techniques, birth of implants,
territorial weeds emerged,
poison ivy, odd the norm,
even carnivorous plants,
and in roses appeared thorns.
Roaches, ticks, fleas, lice, bacteria,
viruses, germs, flies and mites,
creepies galore and mosquitos,
all manner of parasites,
emerged slowly without notice
as cells triggered bizarre forms.
New creatures, product of man,
himself future food for worms.
As if this was not enough,
easy prey became the beasts.
And experiments produced
altered breeds as brutes increased.
Nature, unprepared for this,
and itself having been changed,
lacked harmony, proper foods,
but fruits of a plan deranged.
And of the curse of the earth,
the thistle, the weeds and thorns,
these animals fed themselves,
pitiful, betrayed life forms.
Yet man himself also ate,
lamentable food infested
with eggs of creepies and such,
which hatched as they were digested.
Attacked and seized from within,
man had swallowed live death pills.
God had spoken a death sentence
which man's actions would fulfill.
Thus disease, hinting invaders,
covered the entire sphere,
transforming God's paradise
into man's valley of tears.
And as new creepies emerged
due to continued mutations
the length of lives would decline
each successive generation.
For instead of hailing nature
and its perfection admire,
man enthroned himself, "I'm God."
And death sealed him as a liar.
