MERRY CHRISTMAS BOYS
by Teresita Perez
Houses blink in many colors.
Necklaces of lights they wear
offering much happiness
to people who stop and stare.
Everything is decorated
to show off and to impress
in red, green, silver and gold.
I am sporting a new dress.
Under the tree they will find
their presents of clothes and toys
that, envisioning their smiles,
I wrapped for each of my boys.
From places out in the distance
I can hear music that brings
nostalgic and familiar echoes
inviting people to sing.
Everything is pure perfection.
The moment the hearts awaited,
anticipating its joy,
right now has culminated.
There are parties everywhere
and without further delay
families sit at their tables
for today is Christmas day.
And I think about my children,
in these walls that I call home,
where silence weighs on me heavy,
as I sit here all alone.
Distraught, gazing at the shadows,
contemplating my dim lot,
I ache for the joy of children,
their laughter that I hear not.
Darts of pain tear at my soul,
an occasion to be sad,
for this year is the boys' turn
to spend this week with their dad.
But to them my heart declares,
forcefully my voice blares out:
"May your Christmas be just perfect,
a winning, triumphant shout!"
