"Light In The Darkness"

I’ve always found fascinating Thomas Kinkade’s light in the darkness paintings. It seems like they used to be hung in nearly every doctor’s office, but not so much anymore. The thought of there being light in the darkness is peaceful and comforting, while also making for a strikingly majestical scene. We can conceptualize the light as a beacon of hope through a difficult time, hope that with time life can and will get better. We can view the light as a loving relationship to support us through challenging times in life. It’s interesting how “light” seems to always represent goodness, comfort, and peace.

As we are now in the season of Epiphany in the church year, I’ve been thinking about how Epiphany can be likened to Thomas Kinkade’s light in the darkness paintings. Epiphany is about Jesus being our light to save us from our darkness of sin, by believing that he paid the price for our sin through his death, going to hell in our place, and his resurrection. And again, it’s interesting that “light” represents “good,” while darkness represents bad things in life. Like Kinkade’s paintings, Jesus also represents hope through difficult times and about a loving God who will sustain us through life’s challenges.

Through both Kinkade’s light in the dark paintings and Jesus being our light in the darkness, so we too can be the light in the darkness for others, lovingly supporting others through challenging times in life. “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” -- Matthew 5:16b
