Distemper (Carre's Disease)
Distemper is a contagious air-borne viral disease that generally affects dogs 3 months to 2 years (worst on puppies). This disease can be blocked with the D.H.L.P.P. vaccine. It is not said how it spreads, but it does so very easily, and if you dog has it, you should isolate him/her. You can tell if your dog has distemper if your dog has lethargy, fever, runny nose and eyes, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite. To help your sick dog, check his temperature regularly, keep dog warm (but away from bright light), feed him/her baby aspirin 3 to 4 times daily, bathe eyes twice daily with a mild antiseptic solution and keep a written record of everything that happens to your dog (the vet may want to see it). Hand feed your dog(if he/she won't eat voluntarily) water and glucose for the first 24 hours, then afterwards a mixture of foods. Instructions:
1. Mix 4 ounces of milk and 4 ounces of water in a bowl.
2. Boil.
3. Allow time to cool.
4. Add 2 ounces of honey, a pinch of salt and an egg yolk to the mixture.
5. Mix well.
6. Feed
If your dog is still sick after three days, contact veterinarian.
