Rabies
Rabies is a type of virus that affects all animals
(including humans) by attacking the nervous system. Dogs can get it from the
saliva of an affected animal, usually a wild animal. If your dog has already
been bitten and hasn't had it's shot, give your dog a Rabies booster
vaccination immediately. If the wound is bleeding, scrub it with soap and water
thoroughly. If nothing is done to help your dog, he/she will die within seven
days of the disease's onset.
There are two syndromes of Rabies, the dumb form, and the
furious one. In the dumb form, your dog will become lethargic and want to be
left alone. He/she will become paralyzed, go into a coma, then die. In furious
rabies, you dog may become more aloof or friendly. He/she may wander aimlessly
with a wild eyed expression. Your dog would become especially nervous, and snap
at anyone that gets in his/her way. In fact, your dog's jaw may even become
paralyzed.
It would be much advised, though, to give your dog the
vaccination as early as possible: one dose for the first year, and afterwards
one every three years.
