AULD ACQUAINTANCE

My favorite scene is from "Auld Acquaintance", when Zorro comes to prevent Ricardo from stealing the payroll. He appears on the roof (I always love him on the roof) and then whips his cape off. It takes my breath away every time.

Zorro is on the 2nd floor of the tavern, after defeating Ricardo at sword fighting. Ricardo is insisting that Diego is Zorro, Zorro takes off his mask and shows Ricardo that he is, indeed, Diego, then leaves before the innkeeper can turn around and see him.

My favorite scenes are when Diego fences clumsily in the Auld Acquaintance episode. So funny, I laugh out loud each time I watch this scene.

I was watching Auld Acquaintance the other day and wrote down a quote that I had not noticed before and one that almost had me rolling off the bed.........

When Ramon has forced Diego to have a fencing match with him, Isabella is very upset with both of them... She confronts Diego.

"Diego.... have you lost your mind?"

Said Diego, "Not yet, but I'm afraid I'm being driven there."

Ramon Castillo is Diego's worst nightmare: someone who knew him in Spain and is very aware of his athletic and fencing abilities. This man is far less likely to accept "Diego the man of letters" when he was defeated by Diego the sword-wielding opponent. It only takes a single encounter with Zorro for Ramon to know Diego's secret and the truth about Zorro. Being the clever man that he is, Ramon sets about a plan that will make him rich and expose Zorro at the same time. His plan backfires only because Diego is one step ahead of him and has the advantage of knowing how best to manipulate Garcia. When Zorro removes his mask at the top of the inn stairs and allows Ramon alone to see his face, Diego smiles with a "See how right you are?" look. Diego has bested his old opponent once again. I think the smile also holds a note of grudging respect for his old friendly enemy. Not many people have figured out the secret of Zorro the way Ramon did. True, Ramon did have the advantage of knowing Diego in Spain, but it is also true he did not for a minute allow himself to be sidetracked by Diego's efforts to throw him off track. Ramon knew what he knew, and not even Diego emerging from Sgt. Garcia's quarters would change his mind.
