(Zorro has set a trap and wants to make sure the Capitan chases after him, so he stops and taunts the Capitan.)

(Capitan Monastario, in his zeal to capture Zorro, is the first one to land in the tarpit.)

(As the lancers attempt to help Sergeant Garcia out of the tarpit, they get pulled in. There just aren't enough men to pull Garcia out.)
