Over-the-counter products

There are some OTC products that may work for you, but they must be used regularly.  Depending on the severity of your acne, you may have to use the products three times a day.  Here are some products that are available in on-line or in stores.

a) Benzoyl peroxide cream (10%).  If there is a dollar store near your home such as Dollar General, Dollar Tree, or Family Dollar, these stores will carry a benzoyl peroxide cream.  It is not the name brand, and you save because of it.  A tube will cost $1.00 (USD).

Uses: Apply at night or in the morning.  Whenever you have a breakout.

Caution: This product dries your skin, and may feel like it's burning.  These reactions are normal.  This product can bleach clothing so make sure that the cream has dried before putting on your clothes.  Many people do not like this product and opt for something else.

b) Glycerin facial bar.  This bar is also available at Dollar General for $1.00 (USD).  You can use this as a face bar to cleanse your face.  You it in the morning, night and whenever your face feels dirty.  You can even use it in the shower for body acne.  The bar is hypo-allergenic and contains tea tree oil and lime oil to cleanse the skin.

c) Dr. D's Tea Tree Soap.  This bar is available online.  I have never seen it in stores.  It is a good body wash, use it whenever you take a shower.

d) St. Ives Apricot Scrub Blemish & Blackhead Control (with 2% Salicylic Acid).  This scrub is wonderful for your body because it will take oils, and dirt away.  This product is available in stores.

e) Grandpa's Sulfur Soap.  This product is also available online.  It is wonderful for your acne because it dries out acne on  your body.

f) Vitamin B complex.  You can buy this vitamin complex at most drug stores.  I have heard success with people taking vitamin B complex (two to four of the tablets throughout the day) and a reduce in their acne.  Vitamin B complex is not fat soluble, so your body uses what it needs then rids itself of the rest.

g) ProActive.  This product available online and through mail order (and in generic forms in drug stores) contains many of the ingredients in the above products.  For example, it contains benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil and other ingredients.  Their product has helped many people, but may appear expensive at $40 for a two month supply.

Prescription Options

a) Retin-A & Differin Gel.  These drugs are applied to the face and cause the skin to be removed more quickly.  As a result, the pores are less likely to become clogged with bacteria or oils.

b) Antibiotics.  Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic for you to take.  You may want to discuss other options with your doctor, especially OTC options that may be cheaper and more effective.  You may want to take a probiotic while you are taking your antibiotic.  A probiotic will reestablish the healthy bacteria in your body.

c) Other options, there are many other options with prescription and treatments you may want to take a look at this website which lists many treatment options: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acne_vulgaris
