AnimeFest 2000

Hey, people! From November 4, 2:30 pm, the year 2000, until 12:40 of November 5, heaven was briefly located in my basement. well, maybe not heaven, but some sort of dememnted hell, sure! And it was FUN! The five people who were supposed to be there were myself (Dilandau!), San, Yukari, Toki, and Merle. The theme for the costumes? Anime! No, really? :)

Due to a miscommunication, Merle didn't show up, and tragically, Toki had to leave early because a) she didn't have a costume that worked (it got destroyed babysitting on Halloween) and b)there was a family emergency. however, Yukari, San, and I had a blast. San dressed up as, of course, San, Yukari was Pokemon's James (yes, the English one...I'm not TOTALLY anti-dub!) and I had a comfy blast my my fuzzy Merle costume! Pictures of Yukari and I are below...San wasn't there yet when we took them, so...she's not to be seen.

The original schedule was that we'd start off by watching 1 episode of Fox's supper-crappy Escaflowne Dub, then follow it up with the real version on tapes 2,3, and 4, then watch the english Princess Mononoke, the subtitled Kiki's Delviery Service, Pokemon: The Mystery at Mount Moon, Ranma 1/2 (any of them), a Chinese Ghost Story in english, Saber Marionette J-X episodes 1-5 in japanese, and the subtitled Card captor Sakura the Movie. However....bum-BA!...Ssan brought over her Fushigi Yuugi box set and all that flew out the window! The final scehdule? see below!

  • 2:30-Everyone arrives and attempts to watch Escaflwone in English. That lasted like no time at all, becaue Yukari and I started screaming the moment we heard Dilandau's voice.
  • 3:00-we popped in escaflwone-Vision two, and Toki left. Yukari and I had a blast cheering and yelping and she and San had to keep me from inadvertently stroking my cheek (don't ask! It's a habit!), and I forced Yukari to read bits of my newest anime story, which I'm currently making a website for. We all chatted for quite a bit, and had tons of fun.
  • 4:45-We started to put in tape 3, but decided against it because we've all seen it a bunch of times. In went vision 4, and Yuakri and I had a blast gigglig over Dilandau again. We both almost cried during the final episode when the Dragonslayers are killed, while San went on about how great the battles were. It was FUUUUN! We talked it over, and decided that we were skipping on Saber Marionette since we've also seen it a ton, and since we were down the pokemon video and the Ranma one, we figured we'd watch something else instead.
  • 6:00-Dinner time! chicken cachetori and homemade brownies with a veggie plate....delish! While we ae, we watched Princess Mononoke, and Yuakri and I got totally sucked in. We made a few comments, but it was so amazing that we actually shut up for a change! (The horror!) We talked about how it was a great example of film art, and that was the last time all night the word "cartoon" was mentioned...from then on, it was just 'anime."
  • 8:00-Kiki's Delivery Service in Japanese! Minami Takayama is soooooo talented! We laughed a lot during this one, because it's hard not to, it's soooo cute! Yukari and I had a Jiji impression contest with sticking out our tongues, and San and us really loosened up after the last movie.
  • 9:45-In went Rumiko Takahashi's Rumic World bizarity (yes, it's a fake word. So what?),Fire Tripper. Flaming things! Yay! It was amazing, even though afterwards we spent like 15 minutes laughing over Shu's streetwalker pose when he's drunk. Later, Yukari and I got really confused over who got sent back in time first and who's older and all...but it was good. Very nice choice.
  • 10:30-Time for the crowning achievment of the evening....Fushgi Yuugi! San put in tape one so Yukari could get the background, and then had to sedate me when I started shrieking it was moving too slowly and when were they ging to get to episode three so I could see my darling ater ego Nuriko? Yukari became certain I was insane after seeing Nuriko...which she is now cured of. We got really into this one...it was the start of a 10 hour marathon!
  • 12:00-caffeinge break! After rading the fridge for ice cream bars with little fat (which were nonexistant, so we pigged out), we went to watc tape 2. Yukari and San I think got annoyed when I started crying after mirror Miaka revelas nuriko's secret, but other than that, it was fun, too. We all cheered when the Nyan-Nyan's got kicked through the roof, and all was right with the world. Adn there was much rejoicing. (*twirling finger* Yay...)
  • 1:05-getting sleepy now, but we skipped tape 3 and went straight to tape 4. This was a new one for me, and I was soooooo sucked in. Chichiri was hilarious, but Yui turned into a total bitch with wings and we spent most of the time screaming for her blood. Wouldn't you?
  • 2:10-We finally go around to Card Captor Sakura the Movie, but once we got past Li's cute blushing scene and to the part where they've just escaped the book, we were all too tired tos tay awake much longer, and I stopped the tape for the time bieng.
  • 2:30-we try to sleep on two couches. Yukari kept kicking me in the face, so I slept on the floor. We all woke up a ton, but it was fine. We gota total of 5 hours of sleep....and yet we still were wild as could be!
  • 7:00 or 7:30 (it was too dark to read the clock right)-we all woke up finally from, in my case, unhappy anime dreams, and went upstairs to get bagels for breakfast. We went down adn finished Card captor Sakura . It was really good, although since we were so tired, San and Yukari missed some parts of it. We really wonder now if Minami Takayama does the voice of the nameless villainess...does anyone out there know?
  • 8:30-Revved up to go, we popped in a Chinese Ghost Story. Note to the animators: CRACK IS BAD!!!!!!!!! After about 15 minutes, we'd woken up the house from screaming and San ejected it. Ineresting parallels between that and Ranma, though....right down to the eternaly lost boy done by Mike Donovan. I swear, the animators were sniffing the cel paint...how else did they come up with that???????
  • 8:45 or 9:00-In went Fushigi yuugi 5! Ahhh, tasuki....how do we love thee? let me count the ways....1, hair, 2, jewelry, 3, clothes, 4, fangs, 5, FLAMING TESSEN!!!!!!!!!!! I spent about 20 minutes screaminga about how much I want that fan of his!!!! then Yukari spent forever going on about his teeth, and San finally gave up trying to shut us up. I think she was feeling to sick to say anything...she was a bit fverish by the end of hte day.
  • 10:00-Fushigi Yuugi 6! More shrieking over stuff, especially since there was a magic flute player and yukari and I both play flute...well, she plays oboe now, but still! More wailing on my part about everyone making fun of Nuriko-chan, then happy squealing when he did anything funny, Hotohori was humiliated, and Tasuki did his "Rekka Shinen!" thing from all of us. Mom made some tea for San and we ranted on an on about everything.
  • 11:15-We figured, since the party was over in an hour, we ought to get cleaned up and dressed. San helped me put blankets and pillows away while Yukari dumped the trahsh. Off went the costumes-on went San's wolf t-shirt, Yukari's trademark anktop and jeans, and my lovely lovey black turlneck and hippie jeans with music themed jewelry. We finished cleaning, and then saw how much time we had left:
  • 11:45-Okay, enter Fushigi Yuugi tape 7! I now have one of nuriko's lines memorized, as do San and yuakri (or they're close and will memorize it soon since I keep saying it!), and we spent he last of our energy shrieking at Yui to die a painful death and moaning at tasuki's damaged face. (I fell your pain, Tasuki, dear). I still say Nuriko's daydream was the highlight-"Hoohori-sama....no, it looks better with me! (*See people*) Oh, what shoul I say? I'm so embarassed! Maybe I chould throw myslef in a river too!"
Tasuki: "You'd jut be dead at the bottom of a river then." And then Nuriko hits him into a wall! Ah, unnecessary violencce...sigh. heaven.
  • 12:30-Yukari leaves amidst the snow, and San's parents arrive a few moments later. I'm left with the agony of having not finished tape 7 and seeing tape 8, and piles of unfinished homwork to do. Plus plans for next year!

That about wraps things up! Stay tuned....starting in 2001, Animefest will be a biannual event, probably held at Yukari's new house. Hope to have more movies then! Until then......Rekka Shinen and sayonara!
