HIMURA KENSHIN:
Otherwise known as the Hitokiri Batthou- Sai or Himura Batthow Sai. Kenshin is an ex-assassin who fought during the civil war to bring Japan into the new era. At the end of the wars, he swore to himself that he will never kill again no matter what. He vanished, bacame a legend among the people and was never seen or heard of for ten years. | |
Carrying the guilt of a countless number of deaths on his shoulders, he becomes a Rurounin (wanderer), using his sword to help and protect people whenever he can. He exchanges the regular Katana (Japanese sword), for a Sakaba: a sword where the sharp and blunt sides are reversed. This way he can still use a sword but he is using one that does not kill. While wandering in the city of Tokyo, he meets, saves, and stays with a young woman named Kaoru.

CHARACTER: Kenshin has a very quiet polite, personality. He ends his sentences with "de gozaru yu"-this is just a nice way to end sentences. He adds -donno to Kauro's name making his speech more respectful. (donno is an honorific suffix). He can cook, clean, and is a great babysitter. When in pain, confusion, or surprise, he says "oro". The more pain the more "r's and o's. When he talks about himself, he doesn't say "ore" using the Japenese word for "I". Instead he uses "sessha" the Japenese word meaning "this clumsy or, unworthy person" He does not seem to value his own life very much. He puts a lot of pressure on himself, making his friends safety his responsibility and then blaming himself when their safety is in danger. As you see more and more of the series, you realize that Kenshin is actually fighting a battle with himself. During a time where he is most tense and angry, like in a battle or when his friend's safety is threatened, his personality changes. He talks and acts like he did during the wars2, like the Battou-Sai. And this side is very different from the Kenshin we're used to. |

COMMENTS: Kenshin is my favorite male character. He's loyal and has strict values about right and wrong. He's also very bishounen and sweet. 'Every girl's dream' comes to mind when we think of Kenshin. His flaws: Kenshin puts himself down more often than not. Also, he tends to keep himself locked up, he never talks about himself, never says what he is thinking. I guess you might consider his Battou-sai side to be a flaw. Most people I've talked with are impressed with this other side of Kenshin. Personally, the first time I saw him like this...he was so brutal, he looked so cool, the different language he used and tone of voice...it was all so breathtaking. I was mesmerized. He was so different. But, I like the Kenshin the way he is, Batthow Sai and all. |
