TAKANI MEGUMI

Megumi lost all her family during the wars. Her father used to be a very famous doctor in Aizu and her dream was to follow his footsteps. She moved to Tokyo after the war and started working as a doctor's assistant. This doctor used to make Opium for a business man (and a Mafia member) called Kanryu. When the doctor had an argument with Kanryu, he was killed and Megumi was forced to make the opium in his place. She was trying to escape when she ran into Kenshin and Sanosuke in a gambling house. Seeing Kenshin's sword, she threw herself at him and begged for his help. Sano beat up the thugs that followed her when another, more skilled adversary showed up. He killed two of the present gamblers who were also Sano's gambler friends. Sano and Kenshin knocked him out and took Megumi to the Kamiya dojo. |

Eventually, Kanryu, the drug dealer, finds her and orders his private bodyguards 'The Oniwa Banshu' to bring her back. The leader of the group, Aoshi, sends two of his men to go to the dojo. They attack and while Sano and Kenshin were busy fighting one of them, Megumi felt that they wouldn't be able to beat them and started to leave. She was stopped by Kaoru who told her to believe in them. Sano then beats the guy and Megumi is shocked. The other one, called Beshimi who was beaten up by Kenshin and Sano at the beginning, tried to kill Megumi by using poisend darts but Yahiko intercepted it and took the blow himself. Here, we see Megumi's medical skills as she uses her knowledge of medicine to save Yahiko's life. While this is going on, Sanosuke finds opium on Megumi and he forces her to finally tell them the truth about how she works for Kanryu. Kenshin and Kaoru understand her situation and they tell her to stay at the dojo. However, Kanryu isn't about to give her up. After the attack on the dojo fails, he talks with her himself, saying that if she didn't go back to making the opium, he would kill everyone in the dojo. So, Megumi thinking she had no other choice, decides to go back. |
| She was stopped by Sano, who was listening to her dialogue with Kanryu. Sano, before, had made it clear that he wasn't going to accept her or her drugs because a close friend of his died recently from an Opium overdose. However, when he saw how she was being threatened, you could say he had a 'change of heart' and he went to stop her from going back. She reassured him that she wasn't going to make the opium and starts to talk about how she took too many lives and basically giving herself every reason to end her life. This makes Sano angry and he tells her that she isn't the only one with a sad past. He also tells her that Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, and himself are all with her. Just as he finished shouting some sense into her,they are attacked by another of the Oniwa Banshu. Sano defeats him, but she was kidnapped by Beshimi immediately after that. |

Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko then joined Sano and they all went to rescue her. After fighting the 'Oniwa Banshu' and their leader Aoshi ( who will be back later in the story) they went to rescue her, only to find out that the person they had to rescue her from all along was herself. Figuring that they were all killed by Kanryu's men, she tried to kill herself. Good thing they arrived just in time. Even after she saw that they were alive, she said that she had to die to atone for her crimes. After lots of shouting scense into her (Sano) part, and some sweet reasoning(Kenshin) she was finally convinced that she should live and help others to atone for her sins. |

CHARACTER: Megumi always argues with Sano. She denies any possible feelings she has for Sano and flirts with Kenshin. She likes to annoy Kaoru. Like Kaoru, she also has a very strong personality but her personality leans more towards a mean streak.(my view) |

COMMENTS: Megumi annoys me. At first, I felt sorry for her, but any positive feelings I had died quickly. I hate the way she takes advantage of Kaoru's temper and feelings towards Kenshin to make Kaoru jealous. She constantly flirts with Kenshin, probably just to get Kaoru riled up. I noticed that in every site I go to, Megumi is given the credit to making Kaoru follow Kenshin to Kyoto. HERE IS A MESSAGE TO ALL YOU TURKEY'S: THINK AGAIN! The only thing Megumi did was get Kaoru to feel sorry for her. Do we see Kaoru jumping out of bed after Megumi yells at her? NO! All Megumi does is talk about how Kenshin didn't say goodbye to her, along with throwing a couple of insults at Kaoru. Yahiko is the one who made Kaoru realize that Kenshin said goodbye to her because it hurt him to leave her: "It hurt him to leave you, and only you!" His words, not Megumi's insults are what made Kaoru go to Kyoto. Now, whether you Megumi lovers accept this or not, that is the fact. SO THERE! (I hope no one gets insulted by this…If you disagree then sorry. If you wish to discuss this matter further, I am more than happy to give you a full summary taken directly out of the anime, word for word, to prove my point. No flames please. I have absolutely no problem with people who like Megumi, they are free to their opinions and I respect that. The problem that I do have is when people give her credit for something that she did not do. |
