Tasuki's five older sisters.
- Amefuri: Byakko shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.
- Amiboshi: (Bu Koutoku) One of Seiryuu's shichiseishi
and twin of Suboshi.
- Andy: (Andy Won) Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi
Hotohori's idol singer reincarnation from the mini-albums.
- Ashitare: Seiryuu shichiseishi who is part wolf.
B
- Boushin: Son of Emperor Saihitei (aka Suzaku
shichiseishi Hotohori) and Empress Houki.
- Bu: Surname of the twins Koutoku and Shunkaku (Seiryuu
shichiseishi Amiboshi and Suboshi, respectively).
- Byakko, Byakkoseikun: The tiger-god of Sairou.

- Chichiri: (Ri Houjun) Masking-wearing monk who is one
of the Suzaku shichiseishi.
- Chiriko: (Ou Doukun) The youngest of the Suzaku
shichiseishi, whose power is intelligence.
- Chou: Surname of Suzaku shichiseishi Nuriko (Ryuuen)
and his siblings, Kourin and Rokou.
- Chuei: (Sou Chuei) Younger brother of Suzaku
shichiseishi Tamahome and the oldest of his siblings.
- Chuin: (Ryo Chuin) Given name of Seiryuu shichiseishi
Tomo.

- Doukun: (Ou Doukun) Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi
Chiriko.
- Duke: (Duke Prio) Given name of Chiriko's reincarnation
in the mini-albums.

- Eiken: Fat Mt. Reikaku bandit who tried to to usurp the
role of leader.
- Einosuke: (Okuda Einosuke) Father of Takiko, who was
Genbu no Miko. He killed her, then himself, to stop her from being
consumed by Genbu.

- fushigi: Usually translated as 'mysterious' but also
'wondrous, strange', etc.
G
- Genbu, Genbuseikun: The god of Hokkankoku, who is
sometimes said to be a turtle or a turtle mating with a snake.
- Genrou: Nickname of Suzaku shichiseishi Tasuki among
the Mt. Reikaku bandits.
- Gyokuran: (Sou Gyokuran) The older of Suzaku
shichiseishi's two younger sisters.
- Gyoushuku: Theoretical grandson of Boushin and
great-grandson of Suzaku shichiseishi Hotohori from an illusion
woven by Tomo and Tenkou in OVA 1.
H
- Haku: Surname of Kaen, Seiryuu shichiseishi Soi.
- Hakurou: Leader of the Mt. Reikaku bandits before
Genrou.
- halisen: A paper fan used in Osakan comedy, which is
used as a joking reference to the tessen among the Mt. Reikaku
bandits, who were given some of the trademarks of Osakan comedy
for quirks.
- Hatsui: One of Genbu's shichiseishi, who did not appear
in the TV series or manga, but briefly appeared in OVA 1 as a
child.
- Hikitsu: One of the two Genbu shichiseishi who guarded
Genbu's Shinzahou in Hokkan. White-haired with an eyepatch to
cover the character on his eye.
- Hikou: Childhood best friend of Suzaku shichiseishi
Chichiri, who drowned during an argument with Chichiri and later
confronted his friend as one of Tenkou's shiten'ou.
- Hin: Nakago's race/tribe, who inhabited Kutou until
they were wiped out by the Emperor's armies.
- Hokkan, Hokkankoku: Northern country protected by the
god Genbu.
- Hongou: Surname of Yui, Seiryuu no Miko.
- Hotohori: (Seishuku) Suzaku shichiseishi and Emperor
Saihitei of Kounan.
- Houjun: (Ri Houjun) Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi
Chichiri.
- Houki: Empress of Kounan and wife of Hotohori, who
strongly resembles Suzaku shichiseishi Nuriko.
I
- Inami: Genbu shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.
J
- Jo/Joe: Possible name of Suzaku shichiseishi Nuriko's
reincarnation in the mini-albums.
- Juan: (Myou Juan) Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi
Mitsukake.
K
- Kaen: (Haku Kaen) Given name of Seiryuu shichiseishi
Soi and the name she gave when approaching Miaka in the Amazons'
territory; also a girl who was used as a pawn by Tenkou and Tomo
in OVA 1.
- Kaika: The dead son of the couple who found Amiboshi
after he nearly drowned, and also the name which they gave to him.
- Kajiwara: Surname of Tetsuya.
- Kamishirou: Surname assumed by Miiru/Miisu in the real
world.
- Kaou: Name of the mountain where the Mt. Reikaku
bandits' rival group has their base.
- Karasuki: Byakko shichiseishi who does not appear in
the anime or manga.
- Keiron: Leader of the Mt. Kaou bandits.
- Keisuke: Brother of Yuuki Miaka, Suzaku no Miko.
- Kenmin: (Ou Kenmin) Father of the second Kouran.
- Kishuku: (Sou Kishuku) Given name of Suzaku
shichiseishi Tamahome.
- Kokie: Byakko shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.
- Kounan, Kounankoku: Southern country protected by the
red phoenix God, Suzaku. Often romanized as Konan.
- Kou: Surname of Suzaku shichiseishi Tasuki (Shun'u) and
his family, including Aidou.
- Kouji: Tasuki/Genrou's best buddy from the Mt. Reikaku
bandits, who leads them in his place.
- Koutoku: (Bu Koutoku) Given name of Seiryuu
shichiseishi Amiboshi.
- Kouran: Chichiri's deceased former fiancee; also the
name of a girl (Ou Kouran) who rescues him from a suicide attempt
and befriends him.
- Kourin: (Chou Kourin) Deceased younger sister of Suzaku
shichiseishi Nuriko, whose name and appearance (and gender!) he
adopted in memory of her.
- Kutou, Kutoukoku: Dragon-god Seiryuu's protected
country.
- Kyouan: A beautiful woman who is really a demon in
disguise, who bewitches Prince Ougi into trying to take over
Kounan.

- Leikaku: Alternate romanization of Reikaku.
- Lekka Shinen: Alternate romanization of Rekka Shinen.
- Li: Alternate romanization of Ri.

- Miaka: (Yuuki Miaka) Suzaku no Miko, the heroine of the
story.
- Miboshi: Seiryuu shichiseishi whose powers include
possession of others' bodies.
- Miiru: (Kamishirou Miiru) One of Tenkou's minions in
both the book and real worlds.
- Miisu: Original name of Kamishirou Miiru.
- Miko: The priestess of one of the Four Gods, whose duty
it is to locate her shichiseishi and summon the God to bring
safety and prosperity to the country she serves.
- Mitsukake: (Myou Juan) Suzaku shichiseishi whose power
is healing, also trained in ordinary medicine.
- Myou: Surname of Juan, Suzaku shichiseishi Mitsukake.

- Nakago: Seiryuu shichiseishi, shogun of Kutou, and
leader of the Seiryuu faction.
- Namame: Genbu shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.
- Nuriko: (Chou Ryuuen) Cross-dressing Suzaku
shichiseishi whose ability is super-human strength.
- Nyan-Nyan: Cute, child-like minor goddesses who assist
Taiitsukun.

- Okuda: Surname of Takiko, Genbu no Miko, and her father
Einosuke.
- Oosugi: Surname of Suzuno, Byakko no Miko (and her
father, whose given name is not mentioned).
- Ou: Surname of Suzaku shichiseishi Chiriko, and also of
the second Kouran and her father Kenmin.
- Ougi: One of Hotohori's older brothers and a Prince of
Kounan.

- Pedro: Suzaku shichiseishi Mitsukake's reincarnation
from the mini-albums.
- Prio: Surname of Duke, the real-world reincarnation of
Suzaku shichiseishi Chiriko from the mini-albums.

- Reikaku: Name of the mountain where Genrou's bandits
make their home.
- Reirei: Younger sister of Keiron of the Mt. Kaou
bandits, who helps Genrou and Kouji overthrow Kyouan's plot.
- Rekka Shinen: Suzaku shichiseishi Tasuki's fiery attack
with his tessen, the phrase means 'blazing divine flame'.
- Ren: (Shigyou Ren) One of Tenkou's minions in both
worlds.
- Renhou: Original name of Shigyou Ren.
- Ri: Surname of Houjun, Suzaku shichiseishi Chichiri.
- Riyuu: Surname of Shuisei.
- Rokou: (Chou Rokou) Older brother of Suzaku
shichiseishi Nuriko.
- Ryo: Surname of Chuin, Seiryuu shichiseishi Tomo.

- Saihitei: Emperor of Kounankoku, aka Suzaku

- Sairou: The desert country protected by Byakko, the
tiger-god. Often romanized as Sairo or Sailo.
- Seiryuu, Seiryuuseikun: The dragon-god who protects
Kutou.
- seishi: Not an actual FY anime or manga term, but a
contraction of 'shichiseishi' popularized by fansubs (since
'shichi' means 'seven').
- Seishuku: Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi Hotohori,
no longer used once he became Emperor.
- shichisei, shichiseishi: The term 'shichisei' is
particularly the actual seven constellations ruled by each of the
Four Gods, while the term 'shichiseishi' refers to the seven
people who represent those constellations and protect the God's
Miko.
- Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho: The Book of the Universe of the
Four Gods, which contains the magical story of Fushigi Yuugi.
- shin: A hard-shelled clam (such as the one used by
Tomo).
- Shinzahou: An object sacred to one of the Four Gods
because it has been used in the ceremony to summon the God.
Possession of one or more Shinzahou is required to summon another
God if all of the shichiseishi are not present or if other factors
hinder the ceremony. (Frequently romanized as 'shinzaho'.)
- Shiten'ou: The "four kings of heaven" who are Tenkou's
minions, Ren, Miiru, Hikou, and Yosui. (The ' indicates that the
word is shi-te-n-o-u and not shi-te-no-u in Japanese characters.)
- Shouka: Deceased beloved of Suzaku shichiseishi
Mitsukake, who was later possessed by a demon.
- Shuisei: (Riyuu Shuisei) Fiance of Kouran (the second
one), who greately resembles Hikou.
- Shunkaku: (Bu Shunkaku) Given name of Seiryuu
shichiseishi Suboshi.
- Shunkei: (Sou Shunkei) The younger of Tamahome's two
younger brothers.
- Shun'u: (Kou Shun'u) Given name of Suzaku shichiseishi
Tasuki. (The ' in the name indicates that it is written as shu-n-u
and not shu-nu, which in Japanese is a distinct difference.)
- Soi: (Haku Kaen) Female Seiryuu shichiseishi whose
powers include control of lightning and sex magic.
- Sou: Surname of Suzaku shichiseishi Tamahome (Kishuku)
along with siblings Chuei, Gyokuran, Shunkei, and Yuiren.
- Subaru: Byakko shichiseishi who can control aging, wife
of Tokaki.
- Suboshi: (Bu Shunkaku) Seiryuu shichiseishi and twin of
Amiboshi.
- Sukunami: Surname of Taka.
- Suzaku, Suzakuseikun: Phoenix-god who protects the
southern country of Kounan.
- Suzuno: (Oosugi Suzuno) Byakko no Miko.
T
- Taiitsukun: The Creator, who runs the world of the
book. S/he often appears as an incredibly ugly old woman, but also
has a male-ish form somewhat resembling Buddha statues.
- Taka: (Sukunami Taka) Reincarnated name of Suzaku
shichiseishi Tamahome in the real world.
- Takiko: (Okuda Takiko) Genbu no Miko.
- Tamahome: (Sou Kishuku) Suzaku shichiseishi and beloved
of Miaka.
- Tama, Tama-neko: Mitsukake's cat.
- Tasuki: (Genrou, Kou Shun'u) Suzaku shichiseishi who
was a bandit before joining up with the others, and who can throw
flames with a magical tessen.
- Tatara: Byakko shichiseishi who can control plants,
beloved of Suzuno.
- Tenkou: A demon who was worshipped by the Hin (and thus
Nakago) who later tries to become a God with the help of the
shiten'ou.
- tessen: An heavy iron fan (such as the magical one
belonging to Suzaku shichiseishi Tasuki) used as a weapon.
- Tetsuya: (Kajiwara Tetsuya) Keisuke's best friend who
helps him research the book and later falls for Yui.
- Tokaki: Dirty old man and Byakko shichiseishi whose
power is teleportation. He also trained Tamahome in martial arts.
- Toki: A monk in the real world who helps Keisuke and
Tetsuya with their research. Also the adopted grandson of Oosugi
Suzuno.
- Tomite: Hat-wearing Genbu shichiseishi who guards the
Shinzahou with Hikitsu.
- Tomo: (Ryo Chuin) Seiryuu shichiseishi who wears a
Chinese opera costume with brightly colored makeup, and weaves
illusions focused through a hard-shell clam.
- Toroki: Byakko shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.

- Uruki: Genbu shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.
- Urumiya: Genbu shichiseishi who does not appear in the
anime or manga.

- Won: Surname of Suzaku shichiseishi Hotohori's idol

- Yosui: One of the shiten'ou, who takes on the memories
of Tamahome.
- Yui: (Hongou Yui) Seiryuu no Miko, Miaka's best friend.
- Yuiren: (Sou Yuiren) Tamahome's adorable youngest

- yuugi: Most commonly translated as 'play' but 'game' is
probably clearer, since it refers to the act of playing a game,
not a play performed in a theatre.
