Teto
Teto is the cute, (at times) lovable, furry fox squirrel owned by Nausicaa. He isn't really that important to the plot, though he does save Nausicaa's life once. She was flying along with him in her pouch daydreaming when she was supposed to pull up, and he screamed in her face, waking her up, and thereby saving her life. "Good, Teto."
Teto was found by Nausicaa's mentor and Jhil's good friend Yupa. He saw Royal Yanma's (flying buggers) carrying off with Teto, and Yupa thought that it was a human child. So he killed the Yanma's and rescued Teto's life. But this got the Yanma's majorily ticked, and they chased him (along with one Ohmu) out of the forest. Nausicaa saw this and rescued Yupa by using strobe grenades and her worm flute.
Fox squirrels usually don't take to people, but Nausicaa--being as good with animal life as she is-- let Teto bite her on the finger and showed him that she wasn't an enemy. She befriended Teto and vwa-la, the furry guy we know and love becomes part of the plot. ^.^
Teto also helped find Nausicaa's backpack when both her and Asbel fell into the safe inner regions of the Sea of Corruption.
Unfortunately, Teto dies from radiation poisoning, while he and Nausicaa were being held afloat by the God Warrior.
*Note, the manga version differs greatly from the anime version. Remember that the anime version was made when only the first 200 or so pages came out, while there are about 1000 pages of the manga total*
