HISTORY

This is Sraine's history. It's rather spammy and kinda long and well...yeah. You get the idea. ^_-* Enjoy this chunk of history! Somewhere along the lines I'll probably write her history in a more interesting story and perhaps even add quoted text..but for now this will work. ENJOY!

Back (if you've changed your mind and don't want to read this after all. ^^)

As far as growing up went, Sraine didn’t have the happy-go-lucky childhood that everyone deserved while growing up; even fostering was a foreign idea to her. Born happily enough to a caring mother, Tiersa, and a loving father , Apolus, she should have had the normal life that anyone her age expected. Brought into the world at Keroon Hold, her Journeyman fisherman parents never left her wont for anything. She was an only child and, as any only child usually is, she was spoiled. Not overly so however. Instead of whining and making a fuss, she manipulated. She would either talk or "cute" her way to having or doing something. Having much fun with it, she learned to be very good at it. And she was talkative. If she ever got in trouble (which was rare and not very horrendous in the first place) she would always talk her way out of it and leave everyone happy. Then, her manipulation-skills were put to the ultimate test. A little brother was born, Zelair. The boy turned out almost, if not as good a talker as she was. Both were constantly competing for the best story or excuse. On one such occasion, both decided to collaborate together to get their parents to take them for a trip around on the water. This wasn’t a really unexpected thing, for both Tiersa and Apolus took both children out to the ocean and many times find some dolphins to keep them occupied. Sraine showed a particular interest in the dolphins and often went down by herself to play (much to the consternation of both parents).

At this request though, their parents were unsure, considering a storm was fast approaching and the waters would get particularly rough soon. Zelair and Sraine both did their absolute best and soon enough, against their better judgement, both Tiersa and Apolus consented and headed out for the boat, bouncing children in tow. It would become the biggest regret in Sraine’s life, and it would cost her parents and Zelair theirs. The storm approached much quicker then both father and mother had expected (despite their experience) and the boat was soon tossed by white-capped waves and bitter winds. The boat capsized, and Tiersa and Apolus were killed along with Zelair. Sraine was badly hurt and knocked unconscious during the whole ordeal; it was a miracle she survived. Parents were never found, but the next day Sraine and Zelair’s bodies were both found washed ashore. Both were thought to be dead until Sraine had made a small groaning sound when picked up. She had gained consciousness just in time to see her dead brother being carried the opposite direction and out of her life forever.

She was 8 turns old then.

Her injuries were not minor, and it again was a miracle she survived. Small cuts, ranging all over her body, showed where she was battered by the broken timbers of the boat and a long ragged scar across her chest (from right shoulder to left thigh) marked her final plunge a gainst the jagged rocks along the shore. But, she had survived. That was probably her curse. Suffering from "survivor’s syndrome" she immediately went into despair and blamed the whole incident on herself. That general attitude was rampant among immediate family as well. Her aunt, very bitter about the loss of her brother and sister -in-law, sent her to drudge work the moment the girl was capable of doing it without over-exerting herself and worsening her condition. From that moment on, Sraine was a different person. No longer open, she barely ever opened her mouth to speak…and whenever she did, it was no more then a slightly louder whisper. That tone of voice and manner would follow her wherever she went from then on. As for talking about this tragedy, when she had to she could talk about her parents…but on the subject of her brother, she never ever mentioned him. The pain of losing him was too much for her to face ever again.

After her aunt was tired of seeing the reminder that she had no more family, she was sent away to more family in Igen. They didn’t really have a much different attitude then her aunt. Sent to do drudgery, the only joy that ever came out of Sraine’s life was sitting and watching the ocean. She had not lost her love for it…but loved it even more. As for boats…she wouldn’t go near them for her life. Spending many turns doing this, the only things that kept her from going into utter despair was the aforementioned ocean and another drudge by the name of Jaermie. She and had a type of friendship that was made stronger by the sharing of their work. Eventually she was kicked out by her family and forced to live on her own (since she had come of the age where one was considered able to take care of one’s self). Forced to leave her childhood friend, she soon found her way to Ista. There , she remained hold-less, spending her time in the traveler’s cot and the beach where she felt she belonged more. Upon a rare occasion, she ended up travelling to a tavern where she met a quiet drudge that she enjoyed talking to. One day she went and couldn’t find it and found out that he had been taken to High Reaches and had impressed a bronze! Saddened that she had lost the only person she felt comfortable talking to, she traveled to High Reaches and eventually found him again, restoring their friendship. Talking to more residents of the Weyr, a conversation particularly piqued her interest and made her think that she might make High Reaches Weyr her new home.

Ever since she was little, she had a strange ability with firelizards. She could understand them better then people almost. Not exactly being able to "talk" to them , she understood mostly what each chitter and creel meant and learned to be a real friend to them. Indeed…she had never met a firelizard that she didn’t like, nor a firelizard that didn’t like her. A resident noticed her attachment to the little ‘lizards and said that she had "dragonhunger"; or, to explain more, liking firelizards and dragons more then people. This was somewhat true…and after further conversations with these residents, she decided to become one herself..and she did. She made herself useful where-ever she could when she could (and that mostly encompassed taking care of other people’s flits: oiling, feeding and scritching them). She is just started to get over her anti-socialness when she was plucked out at a High Reaches Search for the latest clutch of eggs laid by Gold Ysbryth and Bronze Rixesith.

After a delightful candidacy, Sraine impressed. (Wheee! ^_-) Now she is a Jr. Weyrling, learning and growing along with her lurvely lurvely brown Akilth.
