One day the not-so-sweet and very un-innocent Youko Kurama was frolicking amongst other people's possesions, taking whatever he pleased, when a Hunter came along and spotted him. The Hunter, being all for things like "justice" and "honesty", immediately recognized Kurama for the fiend he was and shot him. Fataly wounded, Kurama's soul fled to the Ningenkai (Human World), where he made himself at home in the unborn fetus of Shiori Minamino. Born again, Kurama decided to bide his time until he was once again powerful enough to frolick through the grassy and blood-coated fields of the Makai, unmolested by the more rude and inconsiderate youkais who therein dwelled. He estimated that it would take about ten years. But, alas, when the time came for Kurama to depart, he found that he just couldn't leave his beloved mother Shiori behind. So Kurama decided to put of his return to the Makai for an indefinate amount of time. Unfortunately, Shiori fell ill, and Kurama teamed up with a couple of youkai (Hiei and Gouki) to steal three artifacts from the Reikai (Spirit World). The one Kurama took was the Mirror of UtterDark, which would grant whoever used it a wish at the cost of his or her own life. But Kurama, being the loving and dutiful son he was, decided it was worth it. The Tantei who Koenma (son of Enma-Daiou, lord of the Reikai) sent after the three thieves, Yusuke, offered to give his own life to the Mirror so that Shiori wouldn't lose her son. The Mirror ended up letting them both live, and granted Kurama's wish. Kurama then helped Yusuke bring Hiei to justice (Gouki having already been killed), and Koenma made the two youkai become Reikai Tantei as punishment for their crime. .
