16th Goza Empress Azalyn
At the tender age of 16, Azalyn's father is killed by the UPSF, making her Empress of the Holy Raalgon Empire, and plunging her into an interplanetary war. If that weren't enough, her ministers attempt coup after coup. However, this stalwart young girl comes to count on two very special men to help her: Ru Baraba Dom, for military advice, and Justy Ueki Tylor, for companionship. She becomes enamored of Tylor during his captivity and brands him her pet. Moreover, she cares deeply enough about him that, when Tylor needs medical help, she leaves with him to the Soyokaze, becoming a prisoner in order to see him live.

After she is returned to the Raalgon, she is manipulated into attacking the UPSF, but is happy when Tylor ends the conflict peacefully.

Lt. Makoto Yamamoto
Long-suffering Lt. Yamamoto has sacrificed much to become a successful military man. Originally a hostage negotiator, he is reassigned to the Soyokaze along with Yuriko Star. Like her, he is bound by decorum and accustomed to military order. With the arrival of Tylor, however, his entire world is turned upside down! As he becomes exasperated by trying to make Tylor responsible, he reveals himself to be more similar to Tylor than both would admit. With Tylor's kidnapping, Yamamoto reawakens to Tylor, and leads the crew to save the captain on many occasions.

After the original 26-episode series, Lt. Yamamoto apparently marries Shia Has, and continues to rise upward in the military, achieving the rank of Fleet Admiral, like Mifune. His son, and Tylor & Yuriko's daughter both join the military.

Shia Has
Shia Has carries approximately the same rank as Ru Baraba Dom, but as the war progresses, is eclipsed by him. She is much more aggressive and forceful than Dom--it is she who orders Harumi to kidnap Tylor and she who has the best chance to destroy the Soyokaze. Later on, she leaves her own small fleet and joins Dom on the Doroume. She is harshly critical of the ineptitude she sees evident in the crew of the Soyokaze, but fails to see in Tylor all that Dom can.

After the original 26-episode TV series, Shia Has apparently marries Lt. Yamamoto, despite her first judgement of him as "incompetent", and the couple bears a son, who joins the UPSF military and Tylor's daughter on a ship.

SSgt. Harumi
Harumi is assigned to the Soyokaze as the Doctor's assistant. Drop-dead gorgeous, it isn't long before every man on the ship is falling all over her, especially the Marines. But she's only after one man: Tylor! Why's she so set on him? Because she's an android Raalgon spy. Ru Baraba Dom and Shia Has sent her to kill Tylor, but she ended up falling in love with him instead! Touched by Tylor's generous heart, she rebels against her creators and joins the crew wholeheartedly.

Justy Ueki Tylor
Justy Ueki Tylor, age 20, is of course the main character of Irresponsible Captain Tylor. His outward appearance, at the beginning, is that of a moron, a ladies' man, a lucky, irresponsible, anti-authority slacker. This is pretty true - it can be argued that Tylor does nothing intentionally; if he acts at all it is in response to others. He does have a way with the ladies, but this (and the above) stem from Tylor's sole character trait -- respect and courtesy to self and others. He feels that people and their feelings are the most important things in the universe and his every action shows this. His flattery (done, it seems, for the girls' benefit rather than his own), his eternal concern for Harumi (even when near death), his order to relax the confining dress code, his perpetual running away and/or outright surrender in various conflicts with the Raalgon--these all show his respect for people and their rights (life, liberty, and happiness, to name a few). His philosophy "Do what you want the way you want" emphasizes his belief that people should be irresponsible in their duties, as long as they are responsible to themselves, and make themselves happy first. He can so easily believe this because no matter what situation he is placed into, it ends up being completely positive in outcome. This is shown most strongly during The Longest Day in Space (Ep. 23), when only his presence as the UPSF commander saves the day.

Yuriko
Yuriko is the main disciplinarian on the Soyokaze, trying to reign in Tylor's irresponsible behavior. Her rigid code is something she adopted to give her life direction, supposedly making her and the military a perfect fit. Adm. Mifune takes an almost parental liking to her for these reasons. While it seems unlikely at first, she's also the target of most of Tylor's romantic interest, such as when he says her talent is "marrying me, settling down and having lots of kids." Near the end of the series, she figures out the enigmatic Tylor and his message. As she does so, she falls for him and joins him on the Soyokaze's last voyage.

After the original series, Yuriko Star apparently marries Justy Ueki Tylor, and both resign from the military. They have a daughter, a combination of the parents' worst (yet funniest) traits, who grows up to command a ship in the military, and who becomes involved with Yamamoto's and Shia Has' son.
