A/N: Still short, but I do believe it is longer than the last chapter! I'd like to dedicate this chapter to my new pre-reader/editor Keir! Of course, she probably wouldn't like this chapter, but it probably doesn't cause her agony anymore ^-~; Keir convinced me of my folly in the idea of posting this chapter as it was a few nights after I posted chapter two. Of course, then my real life butted in and I didn't get around to working on this for weeks, plus there's the fact that this really isn't all that much better, but nothing's perfect! ^^; Anyway, go read!

Chapter Three
Inu Yasha waited by the well, still not closer to solving any of his problems (though he had decided that they would head further south the next time they went searching for the jewels; it was merely a predilection he had, though, not an actual epiphany that any shards would be there). Maybe he could get Kagome really angry, and she would accidentally reveal something! After all, the tactic had worked before.
Luckily for the hanyou's health, he decided not to goad Kagome after all. Inu Yasha had remembered the downside to his fights with Kagome- how they ended (usually with him flat on his back in pain). Still, there had to be some way to find out what happened for sure. Guesses were as good as worthless.
Inu Yasha went over the information he knew in his mind again. He had been drunk. He had gone into the forest alone, according to Miroku. He had been so smashed that he could not remember anything the next morning. When he awoke the next morning, he had been only half dressed.
Perhaps he should consult with someone else on this matter. Inu Yasha laughed derisively at that idea as soon as he thought it. The monk, being his perverted self, would come up with crazy assumptions. Kaede had been upset at him for drinking so much anyway, and he did not want to hear her "I told you so"'s. She had told Inu Yasha that if he challenged every human in the village to a drinking match, he would not remember anything the next day, but that had been obvious to him at the time. Talking to Shippou would be useless and he did not know Sango well enough to ask her.
'Maybe I should stop thinking about all of this,' thought Inu Yasha. His head had begun to throb from all of the endless pondering. Sitting in a tree reflecting was one thing. Solving mysteries he was not quite sure he wanted the real answers to was quite another.
Fortunately for Inu Yasha's strained mind, he caught the erstwhile girl's scent emanating from the well. 'She's back!' he thought excitedly, then caught himself grinning. Inu Yasha quickly positioned his face into his trademark scowl, and marched over to the well, ready to help her with her backpack when she reappeared. And maybe he would question Kagome about that night, despite earlier apprehension. So lost in thought was he, that he did not even notice that something was wrong with her scent at first.
Kagome, with growing apprehension, looked down into the well. She need not go back to the house, as she had her backpack with her. Clutching the bag to heart, Kagome tried to dispel the butterflies in her stomach and bile rising in her throat, both merely side effects to an almost paralyzing fear. Hesitantly, she took a step towards the well.
One timid step after another, and she was at the well's side. One small hop over the barricade, and Kagome would find out his answer. But what would it hurt to not tell him? At least, did she have to do so right away? After all, what if he abandoned her just like her mother had? Tears burned in the corners of Kagome's eyes, threatening to fall. What if he didn't love her?
"Well, baby, here we go," said Kagome, taking one last look at her tummy. She jumped into the well.
After a short drop, Kagome was faced with what looked like to her a long climb. After landing on her sprained ankle, wincing at the pain thus caused, Kagome limped to the side of the well, not looking forward to ascending the vines. At least she wouldn't have to face Inu Yasha immediately...
A head appeared at the top of the well. Speak of the half-demon... Kagome couldn't stifle a groan at the thought of facing him so soon. She should just turn back around, and flee to her own time! Maybe he would not follow her, and Kagome would have a chance to sort things out. Except... she would still have to get to the top of the well to jump back in, and it might not be possible to do it, considering the injured appendage, without the hanyou's help.
He stared at her strangely for a few moments, not moving. "Are you just going to sit there, or are you going to help me with this bag?" called up Kagome, "Half of it is filled with ramen for you!" That was the truth. Sometimes Kagome wondered where he got the ability to eat so much. Hopefully, it was something her child would not inherit.
Ignoring what she had just said, Inu Yasha instead sniffed the air, looking at Kagome askance. "You... smell strange," he told her.
"WHAT?!!" yelled Kagome. All previous thoughts worried about the pregnancy were gone. He had just insulted her scent again, even though she had been kind enough to come back a day early! Kagome conveniently forgot that the main reason she had returned to the past was so that she could break the news of the pregnancy to Inu Yasha, and also to get away from her irked mother.
Kagome decided that she did not want his help after all, and grabbed a vine angrily. She started to climb, completely ignoring Inu Yasha and the pain in her ankle. Inu Yasha, for his part, stared bemusedly at her. Kagome had scaled half of the side of the well, when her ankle finally gave out from the effort. With an "EEP!!" Kagome fell through the air. Inu Yasha, finally recovering from his dazed state, dove after her. He managed to catch her barely in time to land with her on top of him, breaking her fall.
Inu Yasha shoved her off of him, with the accompaniment of what Kagome thought sounded rather like "Too... heavy..." Kagome quickly became caught between two reactions- gratefulness that he had saved her and anger at those words, not to mention the fact that she had been ticked at him only a few moments ago.
Inu Yasha looked at her, annoyance clear on his face. "What’s wrong with you?!" His expression suddenly changed. "You’re not sick, are you?" Kagome was not quite sure how to answer either of the two questions. Did being pregnant when you were still in the last year of high school constitute having something ’wrong with you’? Her mother seemed to think so. Inu Yasha took her silence to be acknowledgment of being unwell. "Stupid woman, if you’re sick, what are you doing here?! Don’t you have enough sense to stay home?!"
"Like you wouldn‘t have come and drug me to the past!" said Kagome. At Inu Yasha’s frown (he couldn’t think to do anything else; after all, what she said was true so he could not really argue), she finally muttered, "No, I‘m not sick." Kagome’s glare quickly faded. It was hard to stay mad when you were in pain, and feeling foolish for falling. "I think my ankle is sprained or broken, though."
Inu Yasha got up, dusting himself off. Then, without asking, he picked Kagome up. She opened her mouth to speak, but Inu Yasha cut her off. "Can’t you just shut up, for once?" Kagome started to get angry yet again, but decided to translate his words into what he probably meant instead. "I’m going to be nice for once (though you wouldn’t think it by the way I act) and carry you. However, this discomfits me, so please don’t say anything." Yep, that sounded about right.
Kagome heeded his request and merely wrapped her arms around his neck. She might as well take advantage of the opportunity presented to her. Who knew when the next time Inu Yasha would carry her like this would be? Ever since she had started bringing her bike to the past, and the others in their troupe had joined them, Inu Yasha had stopped carrying her.
Inu Yasha looked uncomfortable at just how cozy Kagome was in his arms, but did not comment. If she did not say anything, he wouldn’t. Kagome conveniently forgot to mention that she was pregnant to Inu Yasha, deciding to keep it secret for as long as she could.
