Set in the year 2040, Macross Plus is about an ace fighter pilot, Lt. Isamu A. Dyson, who gets transferred from active duty to become a test pilot in the Super Nova Project. The project is a competition between two companies to test their new variable fighters. The winner of the competition will receive funding to mass produce their fighter so that it can replace the aging VF-11 "Thunderbolt" currently in service. Isamu is to pilot the YF-19 "Alpha One" in which several other test pilots before him had all been killed. Upon his arrival on planet Eden, Isamu meets up with Guld Goa Bowman, who is testing the competitors fighter, the YF-21 "Omega One". The two used to be best friends when they were growing up on Planet Eden, but something happened in the past had turned them into bitter rivals. Tension grows between the two pilots when Myung Fang Lone (a friend from the past) arrives on Eden. She is the producer of the galaxy's most popular celebrity, Sharon Apple a "Virtual Idol". The war between Isamu and Guld heats up as they both try to win the competition and also for the love of Myung. Things get even more complicated when one of the scientist working on Sharon Apple implants a bio-neural chip, which causes Sharon to develop a consciousness of her own, and leads her to stir up trouble for Myung and Isamu.
Lt. Isamu A. Dyson - is an ace pilot assigned to test pilot the YF-19 'Alpha One' fighter in the Super Nova Project. He is self assured, over confident and easily tempered. He knows that he is a good pilot, which makes him arrogant and egotistical at times, but he is always pushing himself beyond his limits. He loves to fly and knows exactly what he wants in life and goes after it. Alway taking a few risk, he lives by the philosophy that "you will never know, if you never try".
Myung Fang Lone - is the producer of Sharon Apple, the galaxy's most popular celebrity. When Myung was young she loved to sing, her dream was to be singer when she grew up. However the event that tore the three friends apart so many years ago had made her stop singing. She is now a successful producer of Sharon Apple and feels content about her success, even though she knows that she did not live out her dream. All she wants now is to forget about the past, but with Guld and Isamu on Eden, she finds that she can not easily escape the past.
Chief Guld Goa Bowman - is testing the YF-21 'Omega One' fighter, which uses brain wave control mechanism. He is cool, calculative, and restraint at most times. Being half Zentradi he is quite large and has been taking pills to suppress his fighting instincts. However the mind control system on the YF-21 and the appearance of Isamu on Eden has made it much more harder for Guld to stay in control.
Sharon Apple - is the galaxy’s most famous celebrity. She is a "virtual idol", made up of computer chips and holographic projections, that every one adores. Her songs have a hypnotic sense, and makes her audience feel "good". With her Artificial Intelligence being incomplete Sharon relies on Myung to supply her with emotions during her performance. After the concert on Eden she was illegally implanted with a bio-neural chip that allowed her to have feelings and emotions of her own. However remnants of Myung's emotions stayed with her. She developed a love for Isamu and wanted to give him what he always wanted.
